The Dalai Lama--not China--is responsible for the oppression of the Tibetan people.
That is all.

"The Tibetan people were ruled by a highly structured theocracy that terrorized and oppressed the Tibetans and that China saved them from the tyranny of the Dalai Lama's rule." :eyes: Never mind that the current Dalai Lama was barely of age when he was exiled and has stated he would support and democratic, free society for Tibet if and when it becomes separate.

7. I've heard that one before |
|
There are a few posters on DU who subscribe to that belief.
According to them, the Dalai Lama is the biggest mass murderer since Pol Pot ("Yeah? Well he was a Buddhist, too! So there".).
No arguing with Haters of any persuasion.

9. And even if that were true, it doesn't give China the right to oppress them also. |
|
Or to invade.
But I don't think it is true anyway.

10. Remember when we had the fund drive here, with the stickies, |
|
and someone made a Dalai Lama with a Hitler moustache...Quite a flamewar erupted over that one. Apparently that's not an uncommon belief. Shocked the hell out of me. :o

11. Wow. You work with some real brain surgeons. |

I wasn't aware that the Dalai Lama had any actual political power. I thought he was just a traveling celebrity, organizational figure head, and spiritual leader.

12. Well, he's supposed to have been reincarnated 13 times |
|
(and he always comes back as celibate monk - poor guy hasn't seen any action in over 600 years), so maybe the DL bashers think he did all those awful things in a previous life. Which is a little weird, since I doubt they believe in reincarnation. I'm a bit skeptical about it myself - and probably was in all my previous lifetimes as well.
