The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.
1. We'll be happy to take Santana off your hands for you...
but from what I've seen of Gomez, he is a speedy great defensive outfielder who has potential to be a great hitter (think Jose Reyes but in the outfield)...I'd truly be sad to see him go. Humber was/is a big prospect that had Tommy John surgery in 05 which slowed down his path to the majors, has potential to be a quality major league starter next season.
Deolis Guerra is 18 so who knows what he will turn into
Kevin Mulvey has never pitched more than a few innings in AAA but is only 23 so again who knows
And if his record in interleague play holds up, you have a pitcher who can hit.
The Twins do need a good outfielder that can swing a stick as well. I am sad to see him go. Two of my favorite players have left the Twins this off season (The two I happen to have jerseys of... x( )
3. I always feel strange wearing jerseys of traded players
I bought a really nice Wright jersey 2 years ago and was over the moon when the Mets locked him into a long term deal. It wasn't the only reason I was happy but the jersey wearing certainly factored into it :P
We have a CF so Gomez doesn't really fit into our long term plans but he should be a solid player. On paper this deal favors the Mets but who knows what you will get out of prospects.
