How come I can't NOT wear earrings with someone commenting?
I tried, but cannot, have pierced ears. While I was working I would wear clip ons but take them off immediately when I got home. They hurt like hell! But other women would actually say to me "Where are your earrings." One friend of mine apologized for not wearing hers because she'd been at the hairdresser getting a cut.

Am I the only woman in America who doesn't wear earrings (at least not on a regular basis)? I love to wear them when there's a special event and the earrings look good and don't hurt that much. But why should I put up with pain from something like earrings?

Any other DU woman have this dilemma?

2. My ears are pierced. But I wear earrings once or twice a year at the most.
I just don't generally want to deal with them.

I've not been around anyone who ever commented about my naked lobes.

Stop worrying about what busybodies think.

hint...they'll never be pleased.

3. I have pierced - and I do not always wear earrings
In fact, maybe only 1/4 of the time. No one ever says a word to me about my lack of jewelry.

4. I have pierced ears
but I always forget to put on my earrings. I guess since I have longer hair, no one notices enough to comment on my naked earlobes. :7

5. I'm the opposite - I have eight piercings and feel naked without
them.

But, I would never presume that everyone has to have pierced ears. How vain of people to notice.

In fact, my husband wanted to get our newborn daughter's ears pierced and I put my foot down. I told him that was HER body and she would make the decision herself when she got old enough to alter it in anyway. If she doesn't want to be pierced, we shouldn't force her before she can even talk.

6. My mom used to say to me in a forced, casual tone..."oh... so no earrings?"

Then again, she has four piercings in each ear... so.... :)

(I went for a long time without getting my ears pierced again after they'd closed up, so I feel your pain -- literally -- about clip-ons. They can be excruciating.)

17. Is your mother Hispanic or Mediterranean?
I found that my Italian-American coworkers and friends seemed to consider it proper dressing to have you earrings. I grew up as a
Texas WASP. We NEVER saw earrings on kids, pierced earrings on anybody until they caught on the in late 1950s or the early 60s. I think it was a snobbish thing before that. A white Protestant girl shouldn't "look like a Mexican." I also had to always wear white cotton underwear because in the gym at school the other girls could start a whispering campaign (you became a cheap tart if you wore anything else but the plainest plain). A girl in a black bra and panties was obviously wearing them to attract boys (how they would be able to see thru outerclothes to the underwear was not explained to me.)

Funny how things change. Hubby says plain white underwear now is a "turn on." Of course, he grew up in the same mileiu as I did, it was just a Wisconsin version.

Let's not even start on girdles and waist cinchers...

i wasn't able to wear earrings until i was already 40 (insert traumatic ear piercing scene that i witnessed in formative years here) and very very rarely did people comment about it

i don't think we wear earrings for others but for ourselves, to show off our "rocks"

now that i do wear them i frequently get compliments but i don't seriously believe anyone notices when i don't wear them

i have an ordinary (at best) face tho, if you have a very pretty face, it may be their backhanded way of encouraging you to draw attention to it -- so i speculate that it's an awkward compliment?

yes, clip ons do hurt, i would wear them for a couple hours at a fancy formal dinner and that's about it, can't imagine tolerating them for an entire workday, you are a saint as it is in my book!

10. I don't wear earrings. I also tried to have pieced ears, but they kept closing...
so I gave up.

Nobody ever says anything to me though.

Sorry that this happens to you. :(

11. I have six holes and they're almost always empty.
I generally wear earrings only in the bottom holes, and only if I'm going out or wearing my hair up. I'm sensitive to cheap metal, and it's just not worth the discomfort, otherwise.

12. Who are you hanging out with?
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 05:54 PM by sleebarker
No one's ever said anything to me about earrings, nor have I ever heard anyone else discussing earrings in a "ZOMG, you are an outcast if you don't wear them!" manner.

I had pierced ears in like third grade or something, but I didn't wear any one day when we went to Carowinds and the holes grew back during the day. It was pretty soon after I got them pierced, but I think it was a bit past the first six weeks where you're supposed to wear them constantly.

i can't wear them, no matter what they get infected, doesn't matter if it's hypoallergenic or not, I've not worn them since high school (20 years) and no one has ever commented on it.

13. I don't wear earrings
Or jewelry of any kind, actually. Nobody ever comments on it though.

But then I don't wear makeup, nail polish or shave my legs either. I guess I am just a rebel. LOL.

16. Rarely, my ears get infected.
But then I again, I'm the one with the naked toes. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=6634387&mesg_id=6634387

And I don't wear makeup either.

One way or the other. If somebody had something negative to say to me, I'd have to wonder what I was doing in that other person's presence.
