At less than 1000 feet, should be far too low for Hanscom...

New Years surprise?

:scared:

1. Guess you better leave your tank parked in the garage
Bad day to take that surplus M-60 for a ride around the neighborhood.

2. Damn, and I just took a diesel class
Doesn't make much sense to have those jets around, I'm just noting their appearance for records purposes.

Real Americans deserve Shock & Awe (tm), too! After all, you paid for it.

4. jesus...
If it's of any solace, I'm in Andrews AFB's flight path, and nothing's flown over us.

Still, I'm w/ you. :scared: Have been since 1/20/01.

5. Great!
The other night a V formation of planes flew over my house...

I was significantly creeped out, they were really low and we NEVER get planes.

10. Odd aircraft sighting

I've been noticing a lot of odd aircraft lately. No... I'm not the kind of person who usually builds replicas of Devil's Tower with their mashed potatoes either. The following is an account of what I saw on the afternoon of December 21. Anyone who has any idea what this was, please let me know.

I live in upstate NY about 60 miles west of Albany and about 1 mile south of US Route 20. This afternoon (12-21-2003), I happened to look out my kitchen window which faces roughly West North-West and saw a contrail rising from over the horizon at what appeared to be a very sharp angle into the sky. My eye followed the contrail up and about "halfway up" the sky I saw what looked like sun glinting of an aircraft.

Normally I would just think this another aircraft, except this appeared to be climbing in altitude at a very high velocity. It took only about 30 seconds before it had climbed from about 30 degrees off the horizon to 90 degrees (in other words, directly overhead) and I could no longer see it.

The other interesting thing I noticed is that from the horizon to about 20 degrees, there was a second contrail which paralleled the contrail from the object I watched and then seemed to end. This second contrail was about the span of my first three fingers distance from the first if I held my hand at arms length.

I have never seen an aircraft climb in altitude so quickly or at so sharp an angle, and I've lived near Air Force bases before. If I didn't know any better, I'd say this was a rocket and not a jet but I know of no place to the WNW of me that would be launching rockets.

14. Great Close Encounters reference
Perhaps the combination of a powerful jet climbing and flying away from you distorted and exaggerated the climbing look? F15 are notorious for gaining a shitload of altitude in a very short amount of time.. Could have been an F22? Of course, could have been something the Gov't would never admit to.

Although Hancock is about 60 miles west of you, it might've been a "Boy from Syracuse."

11. We have a few that shoot our valley here
...about every three months or so. A-10s, between two and six (that I could see), armed to the teeth and loud as the apocalypse. And flying at less than 1000 feet, since they disappear turning behind the mesa downvalley.

Quite a sight. I always think to myself how glad I am they're not coming to kill me, because I know before I died, I'd be very, very scared.

18. I do, too...
We used to have them drop into CFB Trenton sometimes. One of the nearby NYANG Squadrons flies them. They look great, and I remember seeing a battlefield maintainence video on them a few years back, about how they can be field-repaired with items like garden hose and empty beer cans. Although where you'd find empty beer cans on an AF base is beyond me.

It's amazing how they can stay in the air at such low speeds. They look like they're about to crash earthward.

16. I have Apache helo's visit me.
I think they are from Ft. Rucker Ala on a training hop. They kind of fly circles around open areas and duck behind the hills. My dogs just love the visits- drives them nuts!

20. They were headed ENE
from Framingham. Which does line them up for Hanscom AFB, but they were armed which made me decide to post this thread. If these types of movements can be put down 'on record' as much as DU's servers are 'records', perhaps if something ~does~ happen, it may help us figure out what.

On that note, I've never seen an A-10 flying in my entire life, let alone over Mass... Who knows, it could have been for the Patriots game  Better to report than to sit on information though.

Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 09:51 PM by Cush
We have them from time to time, but they're announced ahead of time on the local news (Northern VA / DC Area)

The other night my uncle spotted fighters over head. Being an Ex-Air Force Pilot (C-130 Gunships), he was able to tell the formation and that it looked like there was a tank there with them

30. I know it's only going to get me into trouble again, but....
it's nothing to be concerned about. It's no secret that the military has been stepping up its drills and low-flying military aircraft in VR routes should be expected. Disconcerting, perhaps, but routine.

35. Is there an air show going on anywhere near you?
I was playing catch with my boys about two months ago, when two F-15s flew directly over our backyard at no more than 2,000 feet. Living just outside of D.C. my first thought was, "Those jocks are intercepting something." It turned out there was an air show just up the road in Frederick, Maryland.
