33. Well...
I suppose that today no job is really safe but I think it unlikely that mine will be outsourced. I do mainly IMS and DB2 database work (on mainframe). I also run our management continuity in my department. Plus lots of other minor tasks. I don't really worry too much about outsourcing, I have a lot of skills and a lot of good experience as well as a good reputation in the industry so I feel real confident I could get another job even if this one went away. I'm also in a good position in that I'm single and can go anywhere.

16. No. You go to school (different states have different hour requirements)
and get a State appraisal license, which is different from a broker's license. It took me about a month of classes, and then I was a Limited Licensed for about a year and a half. In MI, you need 2000 hours of training in the field to qualify to take the test and get your license.

15. I've been interested in doing
something like that too. I've even looked into it somewhat. Did you have to do an apprenticeship and everything? Did you get hired by an appraiser first, or did you take the apprentice classes on your own and then get hired?

19. It helps to know an appraiser before you take the classes. I started
out by typing appraisals for a couple of appraisers. Then, when I took the class, one of them was willing to train me. I now work with him. I still type his appraisals because he is 74 and doesn't want to be bothered with computers. So I still make my typing fee on top of my appraising fees. :D

25. do you do both residential and commercial?
I'm fascinated by this occupation. I love architecture, I love home construction but I would NOT want to do real estate sales. Appraising looks like a way to still get a look at amazing homes without having to deal with crazy buyers or shark real estate agents.

Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 09:20 AM by MrsGrumpy
i.e. I NEVER work weekends and I can't appraise at night because the pictures wouldn't show up.

I do mostly residential and income properties. The commercial appraisers make the Big $$.

Ethics is Key. Good ethics makes a good appraiser. Bad ethics makes a republican with a revoked license. :D

17. Yes, it gets more and more like customer service...
..I worked in a Library (private University) once. Some of the students wanted me to wait on them hand-and-foot! They even wanted me to photocopy periodicals for them, while they went to class (and, no, I didn't do that)! But, overall, it is rewarding work. Very low pay, though (usually).:-(

84. My dear Peggy...
the thought of 'retirement' is oh so way out of the picture for me except in simple ways. I can retire for the night for my few hours of sleep dashed with a smattering of nightmares.

I am so happy for you! enjoy it, girl.Drink in every moment!
My mother-in-law, who has been part of so many heartbreaking events in her 80 odd years of life,.... she is just having a Great Time now, finally. It was a long wait for her.

90. she is just such a sweetheart.
she should be on the supreme court! Muriel! Justice for All Muriel!

she is one of the few people in my circle that appreciates my distress of things going on and wrong in the world. but also she reminds me of what's right in the world... the simple things we can do something about.

114. Typesetter (Kill me now)
Well... Lead Typesetter to be precise. And Freelance writer by night.

Bow down before me-- I am Supreme Lead Typesetter. I've seen more fonts and type styles by 8:00 a.m. than most people see in their lifetimes! I've set more crappy ad copy by lunchtime than one can imagine.

Real, honest-to-goodness copy I've set:

For a radiator repair shop: "Best place in town to take A leck"

For a Septic Company: "We'll take the crap that you won't" & "#1 in the #2 Business"

(Kill me now)
