When I was growing up, my family owned a German Shepard dog. When we looked for a place to live, we would always look for a place with a large yard. This was during the 1970s and 1980s, when it was still possible to find homes not built on a postage stamp. Considering the fact a large cat would need an enormous amount of room compared to even a dog, where would you keep such an animal?

an outbuilding such as a detatched garage that could be converted for the animal's use. And a place way out in BFE. It's still nuts though. An animal like that belongs in the wild, or in a sanctuary enviornment that replicates wild living as much as possible.

16. Most people who try to keep big cats

actually keep them in an outdoor chain link enclosure made for a large dog. If the cat is very lucky, it'll get a double size kennel. Tigers kept without enough water to immerse in (the one cat that loves to swim and cool off in water). Some 'owners' are dumb enough to try to feed them cat chow.

Most of them don't even see when the animal has lost muscle tone or has ribs sticking out or is losing its teeth from gum disease. You think puppy mills are bad? You should see how the big cats as 'pets' are kept.

(I had to evict a guy from a property I was managing for a friend...3 SMALL bedroom house. He was keeping a cougar, several protected lizards and snakes. The cougar was living in a crate the size of the one my Bouvier uses.)

I was reading recently about the health and intelligence problems that white tigers have due to inbreeding and how there's such a glut that there's no incentive to care for them properly (of course with an animal with an 80% stillborn rate, a maladaptive mutation, mental retardation and a host of physical problems proper care would be not breeding them at all.) I couldn't help but think of that when I read those comments about the importance of private captive breeding. :grr:

that someone with little to no knowledge of big cat nutrition, exercise needs and socialization would be a better home. Zoos aren't as good as natural habitat, but they're a hell of a sight better than a large dog kennel in the back yard.

I've worked with several wildlife preserves and a local animal enclave. I know what goes into making sure animals are kept healthy. Both physically and mentally.

A cage in the backyard doesn't cut it. Even as good as Siefried and Roy are with their animals, they've done them a big disservice because people look at those big cats and think they'd like one.

Wild animals do NOT make good pets. Ever.

If you want to work around big cats, go and get trained to do it at a wildlife refuge, a zoo ..Learn from the professionals how to do Big cat cub foster care and Big cat rescue and to help out with big cat care facilities. Because there is no shortage of macho dumfucks out there with too much money and not enough sense who are buying leopard,lion,tiger cubs who are poached from their mothers,and of course anyone stupid enough to keep a tiger in a backyard cage can't deal with it when the cub gets big,bigger and strong with sharp teeth and claws. These shit heads are gonna abandon the cat when they don't know what to do with it when it gets older. They will turn them into big cat rescues or sell them for canned hunts..The Big cats are in DANGER,so if there are not enough well TRAINED professional Big Cat people to work the refugee places for big cats who KNOW what they are doing, DO get trained to help out. That way you can be hands on with Big Cats and nobody gets hurt for STUPID reasons at least and the cat does not have to die...

Big Cats are wonderful,but they are NOT pets. Can't be,won't be can never be.You can be trained to work around them but they will never be good pets...The Big cats will suffer all the worse if they cannot be rehabbed after some jackass makes a pet out of a cub. If you love big cats and want to work with them closer GET TRAINED!! Go work at a big cat rehab,or get trained in some other way to do the hands on work with these magnificent feline gods and work to protect them THE RIGHT WAY,that benefits the CATS..

19. A short time I worked with a tiger

And a Bobcat,At a rehab,nothing all that intensive,I just helped out with cleaning cages, checking water,and mixing food, you know messy grunt work... it was one of the most awesome times in my life tho.
The big cats are just incredible,Beautiful,sweet,powerful And dangerous..I'll never forget it.I get choked up remembering them.
