5. Very pretty!
My sister has two sweet water aquariums, but I know that the maintaining of salt water aquariums is an art itself.

2. Even though the Japanese say it's bad luck to name your Koi, mine
were named Moby, Elmo (en masse) and our very favorite was named Angel.

There was very unfortunate incident last year. They're no longer with us.

All I can say is, don't let the pond fill up with straight water for 2 days.

And then don't assume they're all dead just because they're not moving.

*sigh*

4. I'm sorry.
I have two more that didn't want to be in the picture. And since I'm not Japanese enough, the other two's have names too: Winky and Trotsky.

I'm sorry to hear about your incident. I get it wasn't chlorine or so in the water but some temperature change (just guessing)? Kois adapt to temperature changes very slow and go into some kind of 'stasis' very fast. Even sometimes in summer, after a day of rain, they hide at the bottom.

7. No, it was the chlorine and etc from the tap water.
The thing is, I didn't know that they weren't dead.... just in a sort of coma. So I buried them too soon.

I learned later that a good number of them would have recovered and was absolutely devestated that I killed them through my ignorance.

Absolutely heart breaking.

Oddly enough, I discovered 4 months later that 2 had survived right up until I had the pond taken out and filled in.

They went back to the fish store to be re-homed. I was shocked they had lived so long without any care whatsoever. I had no idea they were still in there.

Angel was THE prettiest buttefly koi to ever have existed. She was absolutely perfect. Perfectly pure white with just the most delicate hint of pink to her edges, no flashy scales, she was a leather skinned type; her fins were just like angel's wings, and her body was pristine, perfectly shaped.

Moby was the sweetest fish, he liked to play with our dogs. He was massive, and grew to 18 inches in just over a year from a 4 incher. I hand picked every single fish in that pond, and loved them all so very much.

8. I'm always very careful
with making water changes, since we still have chlorine in the tab water. But afriend of mine lost almost all of his Kois, and nobody could figure out why since all the water tests were good. Then it came out that it was the glue he used to extend his liner. It poisoned the Kois.

Other from that, they're pretty sturdy. When I first got them, I tested my water every second day and was freaking about any behaviour that I couldn't recognize. Now I hardly test anymore but look at the fishes if there's something unusual.

Will you stock your pond again?

16. My mistake was accidentally leaving the water on, when I thought I had
turned it off. I had left the hose laying in the pond, and didn't realize I had turned the tap the wrong way. So it kept running during the following 2 days of rain, so I didn't notice. The pond was at grade level, so it just kept.... going.

I never actually tested the water... I just had learned how to make a nice organic place for them over the years, and learned allll about UV filters, which changed everything for us.

But, I sold that house about 6 months ago and relocated far, far away, so I won't be doing another pond for a while. It really broke my heart too much, besides. I felt so utterly horrible for making those wonderful little treasures suffer like that.

21. Koi keepers
tend to be overachievers, but I have calmed down just from observing the. I don't want to miss them anymore, though, and I can totally understand how you felt about the suffering. I feel it even if I accidentally step on a little insect.

29. I know, I can't bear the sight or thought of something in pain & suffering
especially at my hand.

I went CRAZY when my little dog broke her leg (our bigger doggie bit her leg, as it got in the way of a snack). I was a WRECK for days with worry about her suffering and pain. The worst was waiting 4 hours in the FUCKING animal ER from 7:30 pm, while the poor thing was in my arms screaming. Sorry, I digress.

But I'm still haunted by the thought that I was responsible for those lovely creatures and that through my mistakes they all died and suffered doing it.

6. Cute!
I had some goldfishes still in a little pond in our yard, but got rid of them this summer (transferred them into the bigger pond of one of our neighbors), because the cats (not ours, though) could get them too easily.

Binny. Bristlenose Pleco

Little Peanut. Green Tiger Barb

Flappy. Hillstream Loach

These are from a couple years ago. Unfortunately, these little guys are no longer with me. :( I now have about 40 or so fish and haven't named any on them. Seems safer that way! :silly:

28. My best-girlfriend-Bob
is one of the funniest, kindest and most handsome men I've ever known. He was the roommate of my "boyfriend" before I married Call Me Wesley, and Bob and I were both "morning people," so we'd get up about 5 a.m., both with bed-head, and sit in the kitchen bitchin' and cracking' jokes and drinkin' coffee together. My best-girl-friend Bob represents one of the best parts of my life. I bet you'd like him, ikhor. Few people can make me giggle like my best-girlfriend-Bob.

I should have mentioned that those are not my Kois. That's a guy from the Netherlands I know from a Koi-forum.

And they start to sell Sturgeons all over in the pet stores here; which is pretty bad. They get huge.

24. I like Koi. :) I used to work at a pet store and we had a few huge
ones that had their own tubs. I didn't know this huge four-foot Koi had come in and I was doing tank checks. I lifted up a board covering one of the tubs and the four-footer was spooked and sent up a huge wave that hit me in the face.

"Holy shit!" I exclaimed, soaked and shaking all over.

Everyone was laughing at me.

I named the offending fish, "Jaws." :)

32. The story about 'Pflotsch' and 'Jumpy'
Edited on Sun Nov-13-05 01:40 PM by Call Me Wesley
is that I bought them both at the same time. So, the clerk was putting them into a big bucket and forgot to put the lid on. First, 'Pflotsch' jumped out and landed on the floor before my feet. (Therefore his name, 'Pflotsch' was the sound he made). A second later, 'Jumpy' followed, but behind the counter.

There were four people in the store, and we were all pretty wet after it.

Yes, these two fishes I 'picked up from the floor'.

So we got Fish Love II, who also got eaten by Flower (who was, by now, a very large fish). Then Fish Love III was a rather big gold fish who Flower could not eat.
