PSA: Grammar Basics - It's really not that hard! |
|
They're (contraction for "They are") - Example: They're going to dinner now. Their (possessive pronoun) - Example: Their dog just died. There (adverb) - Example: There used to be cheap gas in America. There (noun) - Example: Will you put that thing over there?
You're (contraction for "You are") - Example: You're going to finish your dinner. Your (possessive pronoun) - Example: Your dog just died.
It's (contraction for "It is") - Example: It's a shame people don't know how to use grammar properly. ;) Its (possessive pronoun) - Example: The color of its eyes is green.
Thank you and have a nice day.
;)

1. Yes, I am very grammar conscious as well. Some people |
|
just don't care or aren't very good at grammar. I just try to look past it.

I am a grammar cop and I think many of our posters need some educating.

6. a couple more grammar pet peeves |
|
to - a preposition (example: we're going to the movies)
too - used instead of the word "also" and used to indicate excess (examples: I'm going to the movies too; I'd go to the movies but it costs too much)
two - one more than one (example: You two are going to the movies)
And for the record, when indicating regret about something the phrase is "I should have" not "I should of" (and the same goes for "could have" instead of "could of")
:)

8. Add this to the contractions lesson |
|
It's either "could have" or "could've".

I went on a 'should of' vs 'should have' rant just the other day.

14. And as far as "should" is concerned |
|
We must stop shoulding on ourselves.

7. While I usually get these right, |
|
I'm not going to berate someone else for getting one wrong every now and then.
Especially "its"

9. I don't see this as too potentially flame-laden. |
|
After all, you're not correcting anybody in particular--you're just throwin' it out there.
I've only ever corrected one poster's grammar. It was so atrocious combined with being EXTREMELY pompous I had to tear him a new one. I occasionally feel a little remorse--he doesn't post here anymore

11. Is this for posters here or for the world in general? |
|
Everybody makes grammar mistakes occasionally - including my inappropriate use of hyphen.

I am a copy editor and some of the grammar, spelling and punctuation errors I see every day make me cringe.

;)
Perhaps some of this has to do with the fact that I just finished reading Eats, Shoots, and Leaves.

12. Addendum: Possessives vs. plurals. |
|
Possessives take an apostrophe; plurals do not.
Ex: "Who are those people over there?" "The Smiths."
"Whose car is that?" "It's Smith's."
Exception to this: "it's", which is a contraction for "it is"; the possessive is "its", as in "Squid cooked in a sauce of its own ink."

It leads me to mindlessly edit my posts in order to keep from looking like a poster at FR.
