Movies about 'Taking back individual dignity from the machine..'
A great part of the Democratic message is about the worth of the individual...the individual is not something to be wasted on battlefields over oil; not something to be devalued or debased because of poverty; nor tortured nor discriminated against. The individual is someone worth educating.

'The Matrix' seemed to have that theme, but so does a strange old movie I watched last night with friends, 'Harold and Maude'. Maude is emphatically alive and unique, not a cog in someone else's machine.

Any others come to mind?

3. Brazil
...wherein a nasty autocratic government keeps the population perpetually frightened of terrorist attacks and tries to keep them in line with the slogan "We're all in it together!". Ultimately the only escape is the fantasy you have as you're being tortured to death by your old childhood friend.

Also ... what was that Chaplin film? "Modern Times"??

I've always liked King Vidor's "Our Daily Bread".

6. I was going to suggest this one as well
Though I think a remake of it should be made, so that younger audiences get a chance to see it (it's kind of hard to find now, and not a lot of people really get a chance to see it). At the very latest, a re-release of it.

I would throw "Equilibrium" in there as well.

8. Rollerball (1975 Norman Jewison version)
Not the hunk of shite released a couple of years ago with Rebecca Romijn, in which all references to "the machine" were politely excised.

Old man Potter has to be one of the most loathsome characters in all of cinema. How we cheer when George Bailey gets the better of him!
