Man With "Cat-Like" Tattoos And Cat Fangs Can't Find Work

GUATAY – Looking freakishly like a tiger has gotten Dennis "Cat" Avner lots of attention. But it hasn't paid many bills.

"I really don't care what people think, so I really don't pay much attention," Dennis "Cat" Avner of Guatay said about the occasional hostile reaction he gets from passers-by.

That's one reason why Avner is leaving the tiny East County community where he has lived for six years and moving to Washington state. There's not much demand in San Diego County for a computer and electronics technician with tattooed stripes on his face and fangs in his mouth.

Avner, 46, began his transformation 25 years ago, undergoing up to a dozen surgeries. He offers a simple explanation for enduring all that pain.

"It's something I need to do," he said. "I have to do it. It's part of who I am."

He has gotten plenty of publicity – and some money – from his obsession.

Avner has been on more than 50 television shows and traveled around the world displaying his cattiness. He has appeared on the Discovery Channel, MTV, VH1, "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" and the Larry King and Rikki Lake shows. He has gone to Japan, England, Czechoslovakia, Australia and New Zealand.

He charges $1,000 a day for his appearances, but the offers are sporadic. Avner said his agent is pitching a show for him on the Fox television network, but the details are still murky.

"If I could make a living at it, it would be nice," he said.

This all reminds me of my best friend from high school, who made himself look like a muscular chinese demon, with long jet-black hair, bulging arms, sharpened teeth and goth clothes before there were goths. It would fade to burgundy after awhile. But I got beat up for having pink hair and looking different,and the same bullies who beat me up tried to imitate my style in a lame milder way...Ironically now I can go to any mall and get a rainbow of colors.

One kid at the supermarket told his mom to look at the cat looking at the mangoes.The kid ran up and touched my tail.I turned around..and said a little Prrrt? and he had this look of wonder that almost made me cry.His mom was curious as to why I do this, she asked me and I told her all about it. And since it was near Halloween mom got her kid a costume ears and tail at the Halloween display and he had them on before she had them off the display ,and as we shopped and ran into each other in the store he'd growl and I'd growl back and his mom would laugh. It was the most fun I ever had getting groceries.
As their car pulled out and I was putting stuff in the trunk,he hung out the window yelling some combo of Mmrreowbye! It was so awesome these people. I was just on a rush of joy for two days after that! Because this is the town I grew up in where people made my life hell for being different.
Sometimes I see them at the stores around town and the kid always grabs my tail and greets me with a meow.Sometimes he's wearing his own tail,he told me last time I saw him he has a whole collection now.His mom is so cool.
