A man can compliment a woman, be thinking about having sex with her, and also just think she's nice looking. He could compliment a woman, be thinking about sex, but not necessarily sex with HER, even though she's the reason he thought about sex.

If the question is, "Do men compliment women that they are not trying to sleep with?" The answer is sometimes, yes.

If the question is, "Do men compliment women that they are not attracted to (and therefore don't even hypothetically want to have sex with)?" The answer is no, unless she's our boss, going through a mid life crisis, and we REALLY need a raise. ;)

Which all goes back to the original point I never was making in the first place. . . humanity is weird.

If I were to tell a female airman, "Damn, you're looking sharp.", it would be a whole other connotation than with something like, "Damn, you're looking hot."

Both are compliments on one's looks. One implies sex and the other doesn't.

As a happily married man, I've given compliments to female friends and co-workers about their appearance-- and I never expected to get any in return.

Hell, I even compliment guys if they look good, like "Hey, I like that sweater". And being a practicing heterosexual, that certainly doesn't mean I want to get some from them.

Of course, maybe I'm a freak because my testosterone level is lower than most guys', due to a medical condition. Your individual mileage may vary.... :D

It's ridiculous to make any sweeping generalizations, like, "When men say this, they ALWAYS mean this..." or "Women NEVER like it when men do X..." Context is everything, all the time, always, and individual temperament has a lot more to do with behavior than gender does, for the most part. That's why there's no such thing as "the female perspective on..." any issue.

People who are genuinely concerned about being read wrong or misunderstood, or misunderstanding others' intentions, need to know that it's important to pay attention to the cues and responses of each individual and what's appropriate in each different situation. That's all!

when is something about attraction and when is something about power? There are a lot of ways to behave if you're attracted to me because you think I'm cute/interesting whatever. But a lot of things are about demeaning women and putting them in their place.

Would anyone argue that rape was about overwhelming attraction? There are ways to behave if you don't want to intimidate someone and willful violation of accepted social rules is about power.
