WHAT IS WRONG with popular singers these days? I just finished watching Leanne Rimes (on the Today Show) completely massacre one of my favorite sings.
"How Do I Live Without You" becomes "Oww Doo High Ivv Without You"
Besides mumbling the words, she jumbled and transposed the words to the chorus.
And in her attempts to show off her vocal range, at times she completely abandoned the original tune and just wandered off to do her own thing with vocal gymnastics. Distracting and unnecessary. It contributed NOTHING to her performance.
She also had a difficult time in singing with the same tempo that her band was playing. It's obvious that her efforts to make dramatic tempo-changes or taking an extra beat (or two) before starting the next verse caught the band by surprise. They kept playing even though she was pausing for effect, and they kept the same tempo, even though she wanted to slow-down for effect. It was a train wreck.
Who's to blame for this? Mariah Carey? Whitney Houston? American Idol?
Whatever happened to good SOLID performances that were more about actually SINGING instead of "making it your own" and "over-interpreting" the melody. Whatever happened to holding a pure note instead of a roller-coaster ride of singing scales. In an obvious effort to show-off and out-do every other singer who does the same thing, it just gets worse and worse. They waver around and sing every note EXCEPT the right one!
Yuk! Does anyone like this? Who thinks this sounds good? Why?
Okay, rant over. Thanks for listening.
