The #1 job hunting problem is: How To Get Interviews.
Unfortunatley, co's today use resumes to screen people out, so UNLESS you are trying to make a lateral move within your current industry, your resume will almost certainly get tossed.
For most people, a plain standard resume will serve its purpose just fine. A gussied-up resume is still going to get rejected if your current job title and industry are different than what you are applying for. (yes, some people do get lucky, but don't count on it)
So, if you want a different kind of job than your present one, give your resume a rest, and work on solving YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Getting Interviews With People Who Can Hire You.
The best way to do THAT is by sending just a letter to the head of the dpeartment you want to work in. When you go in for your interview, THAT'S the time to gracefully surrender your resume. You will have already solved your BIGGEST problem - getting an interview.
Obviously, this strategy requires something more potent than a glorified cover letter, but if you know how to sell yourself in person, maybe you can do a good enough job in a letter to get the desired result.
* The above is based on my personal experience as a Job Hunter's Consultant Since 1987. Since I take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for the success of my clients, what I do, and what I am recommending has to work. And, it does, too.
