College Republicans under fire for Homophobic publication
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 04:40 PM by RedSox02
The college Republicans at Roger Williams University in Bristol Rhode Island have come under fire for a recent edition of their monthly newsletter in which they write many scathing articles on homosexuality, accompanied by doctored photos and captions. Among these photos and captions are,
- a picture of a homeless beggar holding a sign saying "Will Sodomize for food"
- A copy of the FDA food pyramid with a caption claiming that Homosexuals and pedophiles were upset that anus and penis weren't included

The inspiration for their tirade was an appearance on campus by Judy Sheppard, mother of the slain Mathew Sheppard who was beaten to death a few years ago and tied to a fence in Wyoming. Sheppard was invited to speak at the University's new student orientation this year. The College Republicans thought this was anotehr example of "liberal indoctrination", and figured the best way to counter this would be to include, among other things (as mentioned above), an account of a gay rape in their next newsletter, and a series of editorials criticizing Judy Sheppard as intolerant.

Upon recieving complaints, and seeing the publication for himself, the University President sent out an email to the whole school and ordered that no more school funding be given to the printing of the group's newsletter until the issue is resolved. A link to the controversial issue is below.

4. that is exactly what they will do...
I find it interesting how often the Repug types cry when their message is being questioned. It is like suddenly the world is completely unfair to them. They are an entire party of "do as I say not as I do".

15. Actually, they have no free speech.......
Mostly because the University provides all of their funding. Student Organizations are bound to the conduct code of the University, if they receive their funding from that Univerisity. Especially if this newsletter is published with University funds. If they want to publish a homophobic newsletter, they can raise their own money to do it.

8. Nope
The name makes it sound like it may be a religious college but it isn't. Although that would have made it more interesting.

9. These are really scary "people"
I think it is important that everybody in the state of Rhode Island get a copy of this publication. Helps to have that hate right out front, lest anyone associate with this vermin like they are homo sapiens or something.

Hardly worth noting. Usual conservative hatemongering.

17. I'm Calling The University Today
Saying That I was going to send my kid there, but with these kind of attitudes, I've reconsidered.

I will also suggest some kind of censure for these morons-maybe 'sensitivity' training or community service. Or even better, enlistment forms.

18. Judy Sheppard is intolerant????
They seem to be taking "attack the victim (or in this case the victim's mother)" a bit too far. Can you imagine if a liberal group of kids attacked members of MADD in such a personal way in an editorial? They would be kicked out of school.

20. I think that is the key
To attack Judy Sheppard shows just how clueless this group is. They treat her not like a woman who lost her son to a violent awful death, but as some radical homosexual activist. They give no thought to her background. They accuse her of having an agenda, and being intolerant. Your right, I'd be intolerant of people who visciously murder my son too. I'd probably also be intolerant of people who claim my son is a sinner who is burning in hell.

Silly college Republicans.

I guess no one ever told them that they have to take responsibility for their actions.

23. I saw Republican Yalies at work last night!
I couldn't believe how childish the Republican Catholic Yalies arguments were opposing the recognition of gay civil marriage, denying gays are denied rights, denying marriage is a right (but rather a "privlege"), asserting that Catholic politicians like Sen. Santorum are obliged to vote according to the Catholic catechism!!!
