Oil rig in the front yard (PIC)

An oil platform ripped from its mooring in the Gulf of Mexico rests by the shore in Dauphin Island, Ala. Tuesday Aug. 30, 2005 after hurricane Katrina passed through the area. The potential damage to oil platforms, refineries and pipelines that remain closed along the Gulf Coast drove energy prices to new highs Tuesday, with crude futures briefly topping $70 a barrel and wholesale gasoline costs surging to levels that could lead to $3 a gallon at the pump in some markets. 3. Dauphin Island is about 35-40 miles west of us.
Used to take the ferry over there from Ft. Morgan.
Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Aquarium is there.

Very Interesting.

I heard the rig came from about 70 miles out in the gulf.

9. Any pix of actual levee plugging effort?
Has anyone seen any actual images of anyone doing anything to help slow the levee breach on the 17st canal? I've seen nothing, but sure have heard a bunch of gov folks saying they are working real hard to fix it. Where's the proof?

15. Yeah, that's a jack-up drill rig, those are the most common
MODUs (Mobile Offshore Drilling Units) The large gantry structures in the corners are the legs which "jack-up" the platform. They're useful to about 400 feet of water. That one is either meant for very shallow water OR has had it's lower legs sheared off. The sheared off situation is more likely--that one looks pretty good sized and too modern to be a 80 foot water depth post-hole digger.

There is a chance that it is a production and not a drilling unit--it's kind of hard to say what that mangled mess is in the middle.

They'll be able to repair it--but oh boy, that won't be cheap.
