CNN reporting hospital under seige by criminals, Natl Guard had to leave
Reported there were criminals trying to get into the hospital, a nurse stepped outside and was robbed at gunpoint, NATIONAL GUARD WAS THERE EARLIER BUT WAS CALLED TO ANOTHER LOCATION SO HAD TO LEAVE.

16. They reported on the news last night that about 60% were available.
Wonder where they are. And I guess the NG hasn't returned to the hospital yet from the way it sounded - if it was a live phone call.

Is anyone feeling safer yet?

19. That includes inactive NG
"Louisiana has 3,500 active National Guard troops, that represents about half of the total that Louisiana could call up if requested, Milord said. About 35 percent, or 3,000 Louisiana National Guard troops, “are supporting deployed operations” in Iraq, he said."

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9117367/

Only 500 active, ready to be deployed.

18. and that nurse?
what has she been thru in the last 3 days? Maybe there'd be some desperation in her life. Maybe just a little.

But I'd gather she has spent every waking minute helping others.

Now a breath of fresh air ain't even free

7. I have to laugh (not really) about all the people here who have
made cracks about this being a situation where junkies are attacking the hospital to get their fix.

Wonder if it's just possible that it's sick and injured trying to get medicine or medical care as well. I suppose that I'm being too naive, because as with the 'looters' (according to some), it's all them damn criminals running around down there, don't ya know.

8. Hmm...they say troop strength is "strong"
"Despite a heavy deployment of National Guardsmen to Iraq and Afghanistan, more than enough troops are on hand to assist with safety, security and relief efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina, a spokesman for the Guard said."

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9117367/

Evidently not strong enough.

23. Quite right and...
...this fact won't be lost on international observers either. We've shown little or no capacity to respond to a domestic natural disaster. States and municipalities are essentially left to their own devices and paid nothing but lip service by Dubya. Welcome to the "Your on your OWNership Society." This IS the future.

17. I heard a live interview by the (woman) VP of Tulane Univ. Hospital
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 12:02 PM by CottonBear
on the WDSU TV live stream. She was saying that there were fishing boats full of armed men (some wearing sodden mink coats) brandishing guns driving up and down the flooded street around the hospital. The bottom floor of the hospital was flooded with toxic flood water (raw sewage, gas, chemicals, debris and animals...)

She was saying that she as was watching (out the windows of the upper floors) these modern day urban pirates commenced to loot the cars of the hospital staff and that there was nothing that they could do to stop them.

This is anarchy. :scared: The hospital is being totally evacuated from the top of the parking deck because the elevators in the building no longer work to access the helipad on the roof. :(

edit: AAR news @ 1:01 pm: Gangs of armed men breaking into stores and stealing guns. Widespread looting (not the food, drink and Pampers sort of looting ...)

25. Emergency generators at Charity and University hospitals out of fuel
Emergency generators at Charity and University hospitals out of fuel

By Jan Moller
Staff writer

The emergency generators at Charity and University hospitals in downtown New Orleans ran out of fuel and shut down at 8 a.m. today, worsening an already intolerable situation for about 350 patients and more than 1,000 doctors, nurses and evacuees who sought shelter there.

snip

"It's my understanding that the fuel is nearby, it's just a problem of getting to it,'' Smithburg said. "I think the state is as frustrated as we are in findings ways to get it transported just a few blocks.''

The hospitals, which host the only Level 1 trauma center in southeast Louisiana and also serve as teaching hospitals for LSU's medical school, lost power during Katrina and lost use of their main emergency generator due to flooding. Since then, they had been receiving power from a number of smaller generators that have been used to support essential medical equipment.

snip

It has no water, sewerage or air conditioning and the lights have not been used in an effort to conserve electricity, Smithburg said.

It's much cheaper than relocating them.
