Their weather staff saying it looks like the worst has passed N.O. but that Slidell over to Biloxi is in for some wind/rain/storm surge

1. 8:46 a.m.: Superdome Damage Considered Minor

The National Guard told reporters at a news conference in Baton Rouge, La., that the holes in the roof at the Superdome are only minor. A representative of the National Guard blamed the strong winds for ripping the fabric, but he said there were no structural problems with the roof, and evacuees in the affected areas were moved. -- WDSU.com Web Staff

2. The storm surge just hit Gulfport, MS

27ft above sea level and now it's underwater. The TWC crew had to leave the parking lot they were in, the water came in so fast.

3. CNN

I've been watching CNN.

The WORST (according to MY interpretation of the RADAR) is passed.
The winds and tidal surge NEVER approached the HYPE from yesterday.
Damage to New Orleans at appears to be minor and localized.
No reports of levees failing, or anything more than relatively minor flooding.
Reporters and news services frantically looking for ANY type of STORM damage for the cameras.

(I lived in New Orleans for 40 years and worked OFFSHORE in the GULF for 20 years)

5. There is a report of a levee failing

Came from TWC about 20 minutes ago. And no storm surge? Ask Gulfport about that.

6. Gulfport is 45 miles EAST of New Orleans,

and not protected by levees.
New Orleans did NOT experience anything close to 25' storm surge or winds in excess of 100mph sustained (according to live reports from CNN).

I did just hear a report on CNN of a levee breach ( which is different from topping the levee system.) A "levee breach" will cause some pretty severe local flooding (depending on the location), but is a WORLD different from the levees being "topped" by the storm surge which was predicted yesterday.
MOST of New Orleans will NOT be under 20' of water!
Most of the city is relatively safe except for some minor flooding and wind damage.

12. Looks like it's Ocshner Hospital...also water in Beau Rivage Casino

9:04 a.m.: Ocshner Hospital Flooding
Heavy rains associated with Hurricane Katrina are sending floodwaters into the first floor of Ocshner Hospital. Patients are being moved to the upper floors of the building.


WDSU also reporting water up to the 2nd floor of the Beau Rivage Casino.

16. Its in Mississippi on the coast...

no protection so they are getting the full brunt of the storm surge.

14. East Jefferson Hospital

is in a particularly low lying area of the suburbs and is prone to flooding from rainwarter without a levee breach. 7' of water in that area has happeneed every few years from heavy rain.
EJ Hospital is bordered by TWO of the drainage canals that will overflow if the Rain Rate exceeds the pumping rate for any length of time.. Heavy rain continues to fall in New Orleans.

(I used to live a couple of blocks away from EJ Hospital.)
