Interesting, people are getting nervous
Speaking of interesting things, the weekend my niece married. Now I doubt they are Republicans, but the kids they are in Academia (PhD's), and their friends were talking on Saturday about the Draft (you know it is getting bad if these privileged kids who live in a different world than I do are starting to talk the language) So one of them said, I don't know what to do about this I mean they are not gonna touch us. (Yes they come from families with that much money, they could buy their way out in many of those cases)

After I finished chuckling, I turned and told them get your ass on the demonstrations now, or you will get your ass on the line later.

But I have a PhD

So? they will need officers. Four weeks of fork and knife school you'll be ready... if you are lucky two weeks of basic infantry school. (of course they were shocked by this whole concept)

But I don't agree with this, hence I don't have to go...

So. they don't care, get your ass on the demonstrations now, and write letters and get active, or you will get your ass on the line letter IN UNIFORM. Oh and by the way the somewhat coarse street language I used (get your asses on the line) was shocking to them... I wonder if they would have been completely shocked if they heard my cussing as I do from time to time here (not around mom though)

Now these are the people who have lots of money, who have benefited... hell I even told these kids, you don't get your asses on the line now, your life of privilege will be over SOON. The good news is that things are getting bad enough that this is starting to percolate where they worry John... but yes those kids, they are so unconnected to what is going around us it is not even funny. And that is the old charge of the ivory tower... but that is a whole different ball of wax.

1. Last week at the vigil for Cindy in my town, we were all on the sidewalk
holding our candles, and a young man in his 20s pedaled by us on his bicycle and looked like "What the hell are these people doing?"

When will these kids wake the hell up?

5. Sheltered from the Draft, perhaps...
But who is gonna save them from the ECONOMY?
B*shCabalInc.™ has done a fine job of trashing that too, y'know!

There's more than a few folks with PhDs already working at WalMart,
and it's not getting any better.

And "Trust Funds" aren't gonna be much use during a full economic collapse.
Even if they still have some dollars, what good are they
gonna do when no one is SELLING anything?

All the cash in the world WON'T buy a can of beans
from a parent with starving children.

6. I know but the wedding was strange
see I live in the real world, counting my money, and keeping track. Her parents have quite a bit of money... I mean quite a bit, so for the moment they are very sheltered.

4. Cindy Sheehan's excellent quote about cussing:
"I got an email the other day and it said, 'Cindy if you didn't use so much profanity ... there's people on the fence that get offended."

"And you know what I said? "You know what? You know what, god damn it? How in the world is anybody still sitting on that fence?"

"If you fall on the side that is pro-George and pro-war, you get your ass over to Iraq, and take the place of somebody who wants to come home. And if you fall on the side that is against this war and against George Bush, stand up and speak out."

8. Apparantly, their doctorates aren't in history....
Perhaps they should broaden their reading lists.

9. Correct, they are in Psychology
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 05:13 PM by nadinbrzezinski
that was the other side of the conversation, I work as a science fiction writer and in the recent past I have been "playing" with AI units... guess what they are working on? Did you say Artificial Intelligence? You guessed right. They were, them and their PHd Candidate friends, a little surprised that this Navy wife with an MA in History, actually knew what they were working with.... all the way down to the symbolic logic and neural net technology...

Scary these kids are, I suspect, working with the Tech but not dealing with the imolications... what is worst... this has been the rule in many a school for the last 20 years.

On the plus side, if the RW wins, they won't have money for their reserach...

11. Ethics has become a lost art in America
and this doesn't just apply to MBA programs.

However, my suspicion is that in the coming decades, Americans are going to learn why the discipline was taught for millennia....
