When you get right down to it. The crux of the matter in Iraq, the protest by Cindy Sheehan, the dismal outlook for salvaging anything positive out of so much sacrifice, is all about LIES, LIES, LIES, LIES, LIES, and more LIES!!
The justification for this war has gone from ominous images of “mushroom clouds” over Manhattan, to “remote controlled drones” dumping VX nerve agent over Tampa, to “links with 9/11”, to “promoting freedom”, to “spreading Democracy”, to finally,… “hopefully, maybe, things will be a little bit better in post Saddam Iraq”.
In addition, we were told; “we’ll be greeted with flowers and chocolates”, “this will be a cake-walk”, “I don’t foresee a long-time military presence in Iraq”, “we can do this with a fast moving, small force under 150,000”, “the revenue from Iraqi oil production will cover the monetary cost of the war”, “we are members of a great ‘coalition of the willing’”, etc., ad-nauseum. I guess a “coalition of the willing” includes the two guys from Borneo sweeping up the Mess Hall. But, “Hey! Borneo sent two guys, so we count them in our ‘coalition’”.
I venture to guess that, if the administration had come right out at the start and told the truth, people would not be so upset. Like my dad used to say; “you can the have the best trained dog in the world, but if you hit him in the nose with a rolled-up newspaper everyday, HE’S GOING TO EVENTUALLY BITE YOU”. I think the American people are beginning to “BITE”.
If they had only told us some truths, such as;
- We are committing our country’s blood and treasure to build a Democratic nation where one has never existed. That’s it! Forget all the talk of “mushroom clouds”, and VX nerve agent. That was all a hoax. America, you should have gotten the hint when the pResident jokingly looked for those WMD under the tablecloth at that Media Circus Dinner. No! The real reason we are here, and spending so much blood and treasure is because Saddam was a really bad guy, and we’re hoping we can replace him with someone who, may be bad, but not REALLY bad.
- This is going to be a long and perilous mission that will require the sacrifice of ALL Americans, not just those with family in the “volunteer” military. That tax-cut? Sorry, we’re going to need that back.
- We are going to lose at least over 2,000 of our sons and daughters, another 20-30,000 will be terribly injured, oh, and yeah, we may kill upwards of 100,000 Iraqi’s whose only crime was to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. And that will be just in the first year and a half.
- We are not going to be greeted with flowers and chocolates, but instead, with “improvised explosive devices”, shoulder fired missiles, rocket-propelled grenades, automatic rifles, and sticks and stones.
- Without a draft, or conscription, this mission will stretch our military so thin that ordinary soldiers and Marines will be making 2, 3, 4, or 5 one-year tours in Iraq.
- Without a draft, we run the risk of breaking our military and making it ineffective to handle real and viable threats around the world.
- The Iraqi oil is NOT going to pay for this war, but the increase in the price for oil is going to make Dick, I, and our friends very, very, very wealthy.
If they had leveled with the American people with the truth about this mis-adventure, and then people still voted this guy into office, and our sons and daughters still continued to volunteer to serve, then, and only then would I say “we knew what we were getting into, and we only have ourselves to blame”.
It’s all about the LIES people. It’s all about the LIES!
