Will our senators invade Iran?
Let's be honest, Bush can't do it without congressional approval. Our senators gave him a pass on Iraq, and now many of them are claiming that they, "didn't know" (which is funny, because I remember many people who AREN'T senators who knew this war was wrong).

Will the senators and congresspeople make the same mistake twice? Many of them are up for reelection soon.

It will be interesting.

1. Yes he can. He bombed Iraq before the actual war without approval.
AND he has control of the Senate and Congress anyway and as things stand now, no one has yet to pick country over party. In other words, he has the consent of the majority of the Senate and Congress regardless of what the Democrats want.
AND if we vote on electronic machines in 2006, it will only continue.

Syria's next...

4. actually the bombing was justified because they said iraq
violated the first gulf war peace agreement

They would have an issue not going through Congress with Iran

5. He already has approval
He was given blanket approval after 9/11. He doesn't need Congressional approval any longer.

15. Immediately following 9/11 he was given the power to attack any nation
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 11:31 PM by Walt Starr
he deemed aided terrorists.

He has a blank check. He did not even need the IWR to attack Iraq, only the claim of terrorist support.

The IWR gave him even more sweeping power to invade any nation any time.

His check is blank. The Congress signed over their authority.

13. Correct, Walt!
When authorizing the ground invasion of Iraq, Congress gave Dubya blanket approval to invade anywhere, anytime. To get that changed, Congress would have to initiate legislation, and pass it by a veto-proof majority.

I still remember the impassioned speach Senator Byrd made on the Senate floor, begging his fellow Senators to come to their senses and vote against the legislation.

He can get away with bombing, but an invasion is out of the question
Congress would never approve an invasion - not if the Repukes want to have any power in the future.

11. Bombing might be enough to start the war.
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 11:24 PM by Incitatus
Depending on how Iran retaliates, Congress might vote for war.

8. Congress is in recess now and won't be back until early September.
There are some hints that things are coming to a head in August, and that is when the attack by the US or by Israel with US support would take place. Pre-emptive strikes are now official US strategy, and an attack during the recess would bypass "obstruction" by the Congress. They took the blatantly unconstitutional step of "giving" the president the power to declare war, so they can't stop him when/if he does - especially if they are out of town and not meeting.

16. Congress never actually gave him permission to go to war, did
they? Did Congress ever actually declare war? Only Congress has the authority to declare war, right? I guess bush can do what he wants? He has up to this point.

20. It's not just Bush
Congress effectively ceded it's jurisdiction over commitment to war with the War Powers Act.

21. But was war actually ever declared by Congress?
The War Powers Act gave bush the power to declare war? So Congress gave up their power? Is that permanent? Apparently I am confused here.

18. Media leaves open question: where do Biden, Kerry, Obama etc stand on this
,not to mention Lieberman, Bayh, Schumer, Hillary, Bill himself? This has been a prominant question on many minds for months now. These people better preempt any Bush plans rhetorically now or kiss their asses goodbye as Prez candidates and kiss the 2006 elections goodbye too.

So far, no obvious position by any of these people. They better get going and figure something out to say. And do it from the heart not relying on polling and consultants!
