Boston Herald editorial smears Cindy Sheehan
This isn't surprising considering the Boston Herald is right-wing, but maybe the Herald would like to hear the opinions of the DUers out there!!!

http://news.bostonherald.com/opinion/view.bg?articleid=97650

But really – will the president be able to offer Cindy Sheehan any words that would ease her troubled mind?

He has already tried. After their first meeting, Sheehan told the Vacaville (Calif.) Reporter, that she knew Bush was sorry, that he is a man of faith who felt some of her family's pain and is sincere in wanting freedom for the Iraqis.

Today, she has changed her mind – and her story.

It's not surprising her anger over the war that claimed her son's life has deepened. But in a truly incredible revision of history, Sheehan now accuses the president of approaching their meeting last year ``like it was a party.''

Rather than offering her comfort, Sheehan says it made her more angry. In other words, it was a bust.

It's doubtful she would approach a second meeting with the commander in chief, a man she so obviously hates, in any other way.

It's pretty pathetic they are basing their editorial on the distortions by the Drudge Report. :eyes: Email your opinions to the Herald at [email protected]

1. Bush's View
On soldiers killed is like a stray cat that has been run over. That is the significance his elitist class puts on the underling unwashed masses. His family is like a throw-back to the nineteenth century.

3. Bush isn't going to explain the war to you, just go away!
Maybe the editorial should ask Bush to come clean so nobody has to meet with him to FORCE an honest answer mano a mano.

But no, Bush's intransigient sociopathy is a given, like the sun coming up, and the rest of us have to adapt. He gets the first choice as to whether to be "resolved" or not, and if he chooses to be "resolved", we have to go along. Oh, well.

6. My e-mail to them . . .
Why do you find it necessary to slander Mrs. Sheehan and misrepresent her account of her previous meeting with Mr. Bush?

The slightest bit of research into the original interview following her all to brief meeting with him would show that her position has not changed in the slightest. You have simply taken a quote out of context, most likely by repeating what was already misrepresented by Matthew Drudge on his infamously inaccurate web site.

Here is what Mrs. Sheehan actually said to the Vacaville Reporter following the previous meeting:

"We haven't been happy with the way the war has been handled," Cindy said. "The president has changed his reasons for being over there every time a reason is proven false or an objective reached."

If you would like to read the entire story, along with the correct context of the quotes you used (instead of misrepresenting what she said), please go to the site of the Vacaville Reporter as opposed to Matthew Drudge. http://www.thereporter.com/republished

In addition, you would be well advised to read the clarification published by that paper on August 8th of this year wherein they also state that Mrs. Sheehan's position has not changed in the slightest. http://www.thereporter.com/news/ci_2923943

If this is the best research your "editorial staff" can do prior to running a slanderous attack on a grieving mother, you might wish to have them take a few courses in journalism. You do remember what journalism is don't you?

7. Here's what Cindy really said, the full quote from her hometown newspaper:
NEWS ANALYSIS
Vigil threatens to put president in tough spot

Marc Sandalow, Washington Bureau Chief
Thursday, August 11, 2005

Among the criticism of Sheehan is that she already met with Bush, about two months after her son was killed, and emerged from that meeting saying positive things about the president.

"I now know he's sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis. I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith,'' she said in a 2004 interview with the Vacaville Reporter.

The comments were reprinted this week on the Drudge Report, an Internet site popular with conservatives, and were the basis of many attacks on talk radio, television and blogs accusing her of changing her story.

However, Drudge did not report everything Sheehan told the newspaper.

(Full quote from Sheehan)

"We haven't been happy with the way the war has been handled,'' she also was quoted as saying. "The president has changed his reason for being over there every time a reason is proven false or an objective reached.''

In a note to readers Wednesday, Diane Barney, editor of the Vacaville Reporter, took issue with the suggestion that Sheehan has changed her story. "We don't think there has been a dramatic turnaround. Clearly, Cindy Sheehan's outrage was festering even then,'' Barney wrote.

13. The latest GOP line
The parsing of Cindy's meeting from the initial news stories way back concentrates on the initial out of context spin imposed on the facts back then. Randi Rhodes had it all researched. Obviously using old spin to repsin against the person's story that was abused the first time is confusing enough to work on some people who still trust the news- now as then- when they feel like it.

It's so twisted it is hard to expose!

Fact: it is now a new feeble disreputable talking point.
Fact: it recycles old lies to make the true version appear contradictory.

The full version now as then is that Sheehan is trying to be polite and honorable and responsible, giving the President respect and the benefit (which I firmly believe he does does not deserve at all) at the same time struggling with both the lies and the horrible demeanor the casual frat boy exhibited at their last encounter.

She received nothing except a startling eye to shifty eye physical revelation of what Bush is made of. In her struggle to remain objective and resolute the press of course takes advantage of her self discipline and discount her resolute questioning. Or at least the GOP wurlitzer is, always having the media things both ways and then in couplings imaginative as they are unholy.

OK motherhood in its ultimate form of patriotic sacrifice and courage is trashed, what next?

Will they run tanks over roads paved with apple pies and burn the American flag? They will if they want to. Will do it with extreme malice and hypocrisy if threatened. Such pitiful schoolyard goings on by the most detestable and overprivileged members of our wounded society. They can come out with one lie or one excuse after another. The truth will not be changed and the mirror will always be something they should fear.

18. My LTTE
You ask, "will the president be able to offer Cindy Sheehan any words that would ease her troubled mind?"

He could start by saying, "I'm sorry that I lied to get us into this war. And I'm sorry that I got your son killed."

That would be a start.
