We're looking for *1000* committed DUers for the DU Activist Corps

As I'm sure you are all aware, the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor marks the beginning of what will likely be a massive battle over who will take her place. It is a battle in which Democratic Underground intends to play a role. As one of the more moderate members of the court, O'Connor has been the deciding vote for numerous extremely important court decisions. Her successor could tip the balance of power for years to come.

After four years of building this website from nothing into the most popular liberal discussion forum, it is time for us to be more active in helping our members become political activists. We had long hoped that by bringing such a large group of people together, a significant level of activism would occur spontaneously without our help. This has happened on occasion, and our members have contributed to many important causes, but too much of the process is left to chance. The time has come for some official organization.

We start in a good position, because we've got thousands of people here every day -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 40,000 people visit Democratic Underground on a typical day. But we face a number of challenges. I believe our two biggest obstacles have been the following: 1) This place is so large that most requests for activism get lost in the shuffle; and 2) Many members feel that there is no guarantee that anyone else will take action, so it seems pointless to spend time doing stuff yourself.

I don't think we can overcome these obstacles by simply posting stuff and saying "Hey everybody! Do this now!" We need to do more.

The Democratic Underground Activist Corps

With this in mind, today we are proposing the creation of the Democratic Underground Activist Corps. The idea is simple: Identify and bring together the members of our community who are willing to make a personal commitment to activism. Only after we have a critical mass of people who have made that personal commitment, we can start the hard work of actually trying to make a difference. We could eventually bring together thousands of people, but I think the minimum number necessary to make this worthwhile is 1000.

How it works

If you are not willing to make a serious commitment to activism, please do not sign up. We are looking for people who are ready and willing to "sign on the dotted line," to make a personal commitment to do your part in the actions of the DU Activist Corps.

The Activism & Events forum has been renamed as the "DU Activist Headquarters" and it has been moved to the top of the Admin Picks section of the Forum Lobby, Latest, and Greatest Pages. The DU Activist Headquarters will serve as ground zero for discussion of all things related to activism, and will give members an area to propose and discuss possible activism by Activist Corps. When an official action for the Activist Corps is agreed upon, one of the DU Administrators will post a thread in the Activist Headquarters and pin it to the top of that forum. (We understand that our members are busy and do not have unlimited time to devote to activism. We will be respectful of your time when new actions are posted -- probably once every few days.)

Once an Official Action thread has been posted in the Activist Headquarters, every registered member of the DU Activist Corps will be sent a private message and/or email message to let you know that it is there. Each Official Action will have clear instructions, and a clear deadline.

When you have completed the action, you should return to the Activist Headquarters and register that you are done. We will have a function set up to handle this member reporting, which will likely work on the honor system. The system will keep a running total of who has taken action.

When you report back that you have completed a particular action, a permanent notation will be added to your personal Activist Profile (which will be linked from your DU member profile). Each member of the DU Activist Corps will have a permanent record of each action they participated in.

We are considering possibly giving members of the DU Activist Corps a special notation on their profile and/or posts, indicating that they are registered members of the Activist Corps. If a member stops participating in the Activist Corps for an extended period of time, they may lose their designation as an Activist Corps member. (They can easily join again when they are ready to do so.) We are still working out some of the details.

That's how it's going to work. Now, all we need are 1000 committed DU activists!

How to sign up to be a member of the DU Activist Corps

As I said above, if you are not willing to make a serious commitment to activism, please do not sign up. We are looking for people who are ready and willing to "sign on the dotted line," to make a personal commitment to do your part in the actions of the DU Activist Corps. Signing up to be a member of the DU Activist Corps is simple:

1. You must be a registered member of Democratic Underground, and you must be logged in. If you are not registered or logged on, please do so now.

2. Just click this link to join the DU Activist Corps. It will automatically register you as a member.

3. At any time, you can check if you or someone else is a member of the DU Activist Corps by looking at their DU profile.

We can combine with 4,500 other Sponsors and bring many of our 70,000 to Washington DC that weekend to give "them" a demonstration that "they" can't ignore. (Whether "they" is the MSM, Press or administration (who could look at over 1/2 a million signatures and call John Conyer's request for accountability on the DSM "old news.")

Individually we can get out in our communities and get the word out to local activist organizations as well. If each DU Activists tells 10 other organizations about this and gets even one to sign on to it, we will be able to increase by about 1/5th the entire present sponsorship amount. If MoveOn isn't involved already, maybe they should be as well.

We need a 5 Million Man-Woman-Child March to NAIL the MESSAGE on the DOOR of the WHITE HOUSE that WE THE PEOPLE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF LIES AND MISMANAGEMENT OF THIS NATION - WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK! BUSHco GO HOME! NOW!!!!

I'm thinking we can "man" a nearby hotel room/suite or rent a bus or a motorhome to serve as the base of DemocraticUnderground participaiton in this event.

We can prepare some shout outs ahead of time and bring megaphones, signs etc... "WE THE PEOPLE" "DEMAND JUSTICE" "DO YOU HEAR US?" "MR BUSH" Combining with all these other agencies I have this crazy dream of 5 Million People in DC shouting loud enough to rumble buildings and set off car alarms for miles.

I just finished my "College Student Success" course, and one of the goals on my 5 year plan was to become more active in progressive politics. Since I'm already a DU'er and spend part of my day here every day, this is perfect. I'm in the rural south, so I can participate without having to travel. I like and believe in DU.
I want desperately to do SOMETHING to change this country for the better. I saw what DU was able to do to help the people up in East Waynesville during the church flap, and even though I knew how great DU was, I was impressed. So yes, sign me up!

As an aside, I've been wanting to apologize for never having donated; I'm going to school now (at age 46) because I was laid off (2 days after the election). Even though I'm a secretary, I was classified as a Trade Affected Worker, which made me eligible for retraining. It's my 3rd layoff since the shrub was installed the first time. In other words, I'm kinda broke and likely to be for another 2 years, while I'm in school. It's got the up side that in 2 years I'll have a paralegal degree, but it will take some determination on my part.

I do have one question: Are you going to take more than 500 people if you get them, or are you cutting off at 500? Because I don't want to prevent from joining some of the other members who are so much more worthy of the honor and may want to join. I'm not trying to be smarmy here, I mean that sincerely...so if I sign up and someone who's a 1000+ and gold star member wants in, I don't want them left out instead of me!!!

A threat to our environment

Right-wingers see a perfect opportunity now that Justice O'Connor has retired to appoint another member that will further their agenda of weakening our federal protection for our environment. Mr. Bush is most likely to select a judge in the clothing of William Myers, who believes that environmental laws are unconstitutional and a detriment to private property rights. Mr. Bush has undermined public health protections in the name of protecting industry by rolling back clean air and water standards, ignoring global warming, hindering clean up of toxic waste dumps, turning the Environmental Protection Agency into one that prostitutes the environment, and most alarmingly withholding or even changing key scientific evidence and reports to fit their needs. Environmental laws are anathema to these types who believe that these laws increase the cost of business. Conservatives believe that this cuts into business profits and that the lack of environmental laws in the past was tied to massive economic growth, but do not see the human cost of millions of workers who with their children have been exposed to the effects of polluted workplaces.

Bush needs to appoint a nominee that is acceptable to liberals if he wants to avoid another filibuster showdown. Those on the right want a Bush lackey who will rubber stamp every bit of their agenda without question. Republicans believe that they have a "mandate" to obtain such a nominee. Instead Bush should look towards a candidate more towards the center, a moderate who will show independence and not toe the party line.

Thank you, Skinner, for finally making this forum more activist-friendly. As someone who gets aggravated with the "all talk, no action" trend at DU, its relieving to know that we activists will finally be getting some organization around here.

CODEPINK LA and ImpeachCentral are working together to start a SUMMER OF PROTEST movement, which we hope will catch on quickly throughout the country. afterdowningstreet.org gave us credit for "setting the standard" and we're well aware that what California does the country follows.

All it takes is ONE PERSON to decide to start it in their area and invite all area groups to participate. Using the same movement name across the country is reminiscent of the successful strategy of the Civil Rights movement -- and we sincerely hope that THE SUMMER OF PROTEST earns a place in history.

This is one way how the Democracy Cell Project and D.U. are really symbiotic in nature. The communication is already set up at Democracy Cell Project and DU has large numbers. The Democracy Cell Project helps train people for activism and gives them the tools to be effective advocates for change. We are both on the same side--we want a democratic government and not fascism!

I'd also like to say, I am in no way trying to steal Skinner's or D.U.'s thunder here. I LOVE that he is getting this going. I firmly believe that the Democracy Cell Project and D.U. can work together to create, as Jessie Jackson said, "A more perfect union."

There's a good number of furriners here, and we might sometimes be useful. But it would be my position that there are also things we oughta keep our faces out of.

(That's why there are polls at DU in which I don't "vote", f'r instance, just on principle. Some things aren't my business, and some polls I shouldn't try to influence the numbers in.)

Maybe, down the line, you could consider two classes of membership in the corps. You citizens and residents of the US would be first class members, and we others would be something like associate activists. If an action was appropriate for us to be involved in -- like, say, something having to do with US foreign policy -- then we'd be notified and invited and recognized for contributing.

Basically, there are things USAmerican in which the rest of the world should have voice, even though we don't get vote -- while when it comes to how you people organize your social security system and the like, we should take a friendly interest and of course offer all the advice we like, but not butt in. ;)

I hope that I can be of assistance, maybe create neccessary Flash animations (approved of course) and get them out there using DU'rs and my contacts to spread the word - like Will Pitt said we can pool resources in a way, and I appreciate what Eloriel said in that not all people may agree with the views of others, I can understand how that would be a problem in some ways.

I just got back from filming the Conyers Hearing in DC and now have footage that the Media cannot spin. As I gain more footage in the future (and the manager in the Judiciary Office wants me to cover more important events) I think that we could join forces to get the word out with Video, etc - maybe create a "house party" DVD that people could donate to the DU and receive something they could use like the MoveOn folks are doing.. I recently received an email where the MoveOn folks are talking about showing films at these house parties - there's no reason why WE at the DU can't make something like that and get it out to EVERYONE.

So I've signed up, but I'd like to work with DU in a more oblique fashion, in my own way, at my pace since I have a very full plate in many ways..

Is that possible? I'm not saying that I can't do most of the things it appears that are needed as a DU activist, I'm just saying that I may have more to add to the mix.

In any case, this a brilliant Idea, and more sites need to do this until we have a UNION of the Original 13 Cyber Colonies like I've been saying for a long time :)

Exactly, I really don't make any money for what I do, the fine folks who donated for the Conyers video basically paid me back for my rent money which I took a chance on making back.

Video/editing/DVD production and distribution is very expensive so when I make offers like before and in the future for the most part I'm also making a donation of my time as well, which I don't mind at all as it's for the cause.

I've been making animations on TBTM for years for free, tho we did get ARMY OF ONE made into a 30 and 60 second commercial and a rich pal put up the bucks to run it all over cable during New Hampshire's Primaries, etc..

207. How will the "causes" be chosen? I spend a lot of my DU time (other than

reading and catching up) composing and posting (and posting at other sites) on causes I think are extremely important and yet under the radar. I would want to be able to suggest causes like this for consideration. It seems to me that this is the most vulnerable point - how are "causes" going to be chosen for activism and more important, how are other potentially important causes passed over? I would have no problem writing LTTEs and such on causes I was asked to support, but I would also want to be sure causes that I feel need attention get it.

So my greatest concern about this new endeavor is that it could detract from the ability to raise interest in "non-approved" projects. If all 500 or 10,000 of the people who are most likely to actually DO something, spread the word, write LTTEs, are following marching orders on the "recommended" causes, I'm afraid that these under-the-radar causes will fall through the cracks.

It's one of the great strengths of DU to be able to rouse interest and at least the possibility of action on many causes that are NOT the ones that are most often heard about. I wouldn't want to lose that strength while taking advantage of the ability to storm the gates on the issues that are better known.

(Like many others here, I also have some physical disabilities and I can't promise to always do something the same day it is requested.)

Any comments on this, Skinner? What about keeping the ability to bring important but under-publicized issues to the attention of DUers? And will there be a special forum for posting on these under-reported causes? Some of them are EXTREMELY important, like some truly sinister legislation that is on its way through the House. (I'm thinking of HR 1316, but there are others.) And the practice of CIA extraordinary rendition. And many others.

I'm sure that the DU admin can recognize the fights that are most important at the time, frankly I've seen MoveOn go after battles that are sure to lose a lot of money and waste some time.. (props to MoveOn for all they do, I'm not dissing them)..

But yeah, I see problems that Takebackthemedia.com wants to go after on a smaller scale but very important, like why the Troops are subjected to FOX tv while in the field, and forced to listen to Limbaugh on the ARMED FORCES RADIO Network - we are considering an action to demand that Air America Radio get equal time on the air since Limbaugh is being shoved down their throats, etc..

Still, like Skinner said, there are BIG issues that need to be dealt with NOW, taking the gloves off and getting out the 20 lb sledge hammer.

is that people respond to "web/news bytes" and everyone wants to be heard so the potential for action, even if someone is doing something, gets lost in the hubbub of 30 threads with three posts of folks that agree with that person.

or the "Is Dean GAY?" (only an example, never been posted as far as I'm aware) kind of sensational dreck that gets everyone spitting mad or confused or demanding links for proof, etc that in the end drown out real progress.

In a lot of cases the cream does rise to the top, as in Andy's sickness, etc and that's a good thing.

I've come to the decision that this whole country is in the grips of a PR war. So I believe that however much marching in the streets we do, if it doesn't get reported it has no effect. But that well placed PR, sometimes even nutty but fun - but it must be truthful & educational, can have a direct impact and get all eyes on a wrong, so many that the perpetrators back away from the "cookie jar" (crime, treasury, unneccessary deaths) slowly to save their political lives.

When I was reviewing the filming of Conyers & Crew at the WHite House gate and saw all the video cameras ON THE LAWN behind the fence, and then all the video cameras BEHIND Conyers - THEN the White House accepting the 560,000 signatures & 122 Congressmen sigs - that's when I realised that the power of PR is really in the hands of the people.

We need to arm ourselves with cameras, film injustice (as the camera doesn't lie) and shove it in their faces, the more cameras the better - they HAD to accept the papers at the White House as they knew that the WEB if nothing else had the ability to SHOW their arrogance and Now news trickles from the Web to the MSM because THEY are lazy and overpaid, passionless, while WE have a COMMUNITY that desires truth, facts, etc

CNN can't PAY enough people to have a 60,000 member investigative force like the DU. WIth all the talent here -

We can OWN THEM.

...my concern is that there are many causes that require attention and we need to be aware of them. Yes, i'm sure important ones will be chosen for the "lockstep" response. But I don't want that to overwhelm and drown out the OTHER important causes.

There SHOULD be a way to harness the power of DU and other internet communities as Skinner is proposing. It's a grand idea and, given the dark state of things and the expectations for worse, it's essential. However, we also need to make plans and organize positively IN ADDITION TO the fighting we have to do. Yes, the fighting is essential, but we also have to plan and brainstorm, help create and encourage the positive alternatives to the horrors of the Bush administration. We have to coax the public to join in, and we want MORE than their anger, we want their HOPE and positive, forward-looking energy. Otherwise we will see apathy and despair.

Hence my concern that we not have a system here that is pushing ONLY "the cause of the week." Yes, that has to be done, but it's not enough. There are other things that have to be fought against, education campaigns - first for us and then for the public - on little-known but vital issues like horrible legislation or secret criminal policies, and there has to be brainstorming and gestating of practical, positive plans, ideas, projects for the future. We can't be one-dimensional. Yes, we have to fight the urgent fights together, but we also have to keep our eyes open at the wider picture.

I don't want the "cause of the week" approach to reduce the ability to gather response, interest and awareness of other important issues.

This type of discussion of the extension of the project is critical.

I understand when people are in employment situations that
preclude activism offline so to speak, and so we need to
find people willing to be visible offline in dissent.

I am an educator, a tenured professor, and one of the things that
has absolutely floored and disillusioned me is the absence of
dissent on American University campuses.

I support the moveon.org styled neighborhood organizations, but
there is a void in seeding campuses with dissent.

We need national teach-out days, we need to do some old
fashion sit-ins in administration buildings. We need an online
source book for the lesson plans on DSM, etc.

In the old days when you marched you got in groups--union there, students there--it doesn't always make sense, but sometimes it does.

So my suggestion is start building in a way to create offline ad-hoc groups such as educators to facilitate broader actions.

This is the area in which I would like to help beyond the checkbook sign the petition route, as meaningful as that stuff is.

possibly a loose quota of number of actions participated in as a percentage (say 20%) as a minimum of online actions requested would keep person in good standing. I know it's cheezy, but having some objective standard makes someone feel comfortable, and others feel motivated.

I don't know what the procedure is for (a) proposing actions and(b) approving them. Do you support UFPJ -- links to various issues, like Zach in Tenn (gay teen incarcerated ...), or various people locked up (civil libs -- Guantanamo, possible links to desperate AI issues), groups working on Sudan, on Iraq War, on environment and energy, and so on. I suppose you will pursue actions you know the vast majority of DU people will unreservedly support. I hope that at least baseline support for peace movement is a REGULAR part of it.

I'm an expat living in Canada - so all of your actions may not be applicable, however, there are some cases where I may be able to do things others cannot or may hear about things others do no - also through other groups I can instantly relay information to several hundred others, in Canada, The US, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Asia.

There also may be times when I am out of town and cannot respond quickly to activities. Let me know if I can be useful to you.

I'm interested (as I am online all the time); however, I cannot drive

very far from my home, so if it involved trips for protesting, I

would need to get to know some of you who are from Southwest Virginia

(near Wytheville or Marion), to get with and hopefully get a little

smoke going on around here because if their is smoke, theres gotta be

a fire, right?

PS: I, also, am a smoker so you may want to take that into consideration before contacting me. I don't mind stepping outside to smoke; however, I know the smell stays on my clothing, and I wouldn't want to offend anyone with allergies like myself. FYI just in case.
