We're looking for *1000* committed DUers for the DU Activist Corps
Edited on Sat Jul-02-05 11:05 AM by Skinner
UPDATE: The response so far has been great! So, we're increasing our goal to 1000! --Skinner

As I'm sure you are all aware, the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor marks the beginning of what will likely be a massive battle over who will take her place. It is a battle in which Democratic Underground intends to play a role. As one of the more moderate members of the court, O'Connor has been the deciding vote for numerous extremely important court decisions. Her successor could tip the balance of power for years to come.

After four years of building this website from nothing into the most popular liberal discussion forum, it is time for us to be more active in helping our members become political activists. We had long hoped that by bringing such a large group of people together, a significant level of activism would occur spontaneously without our help. This has happened on occasion, and our members have contributed to many important causes, but too much of the process is left to chance. The time has come for some official organization.

We start in a good position, because we've got thousands of people here every day -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 40,000 people visit Democratic Underground on a typical day. But we face a number of challenges. I believe our two biggest obstacles have been the following: 1) This place is so large that most requests for activism get lost in the shuffle; and 2) Many members feel that there is no guarantee that anyone else will take action, so it seems pointless to spend time doing stuff yourself.

I don't think we can overcome these obstacles by simply posting stuff and saying "Hey everybody! Do this now!" We need to do more.

The Democratic Underground Activist Corps

With this in mind, today we are proposing the creation of the Democratic Underground Activist Corps. The idea is simple: Identify and bring together the members of our community who are willing to make a personal commitment to activism. Only after we have a critical mass of people who have made that personal commitment, we can start the hard work of actually trying to make a difference. We could eventually bring together thousands of people, but I think the minimum number necessary to make this worthwhile is 1000.

How it works

If you are not willing to make a serious commitment to activism, please do not sign up. We are looking for people who are ready and willing to "sign on the dotted line," to make a personal commitment to do your part in the actions of the DU Activist Corps.

The Activism & Events forum has been renamed as the "DU Activist Headquarters" and it has been moved to the top of the Admin Picks section of the Forum Lobby, Latest, and Greatest Pages. The DU Activist Headquarters will serve as ground zero for discussion of all things related to activism, and will give members an area to propose and discuss possible activism by Activist Corps. When an official action for the Activist Corps is agreed upon, one of the DU Administrators will post a thread in the Activist Headquarters and pin it to the top of that forum. (We understand that our members are busy and do not have unlimited time to devote to activism. We will be respectful of your time when new actions are posted -- probably once every few days.)

Once an Official Action thread has been posted in the Activist Headquarters, every registered member of the DU Activist Corps will be sent a private message and/or email message to let you know that it is there. Each Official Action will have clear instructions, and a clear deadline.

When you have completed the action, you should return to the Activist Headquarters and register that you are done. We will have a function set up to handle this member reporting, which will likely work on the honor system. The system will keep a running total of who has taken action.

When you report back that you have completed a particular action, a permanent notation will be added to your personal Activist Profile (which will be linked from your DU member profile). Each member of the DU Activist Corps will have a permanent record of each action they participated in.

We are considering possibly giving members of the DU Activist Corps a special notation on their profile and/or posts, indicating that they are registered members of the Activist Corps. If a member stops participating in the Activist Corps for an extended period of time, they may lose their designation as an Activist Corps member. (They can easily join again when they are ready to do so.) We are still working out some of the details.

That's how it's going to work. Now, all we need are 1000 committed DU activists!

How to sign up to be a member of the DU Activist Corps

As I said above, if you are not willing to make a serious commitment to activism, please do not sign up. We are looking for people who are ready and willing to "sign on the dotted line," to make a personal commitment to do your part in the actions of the DU Activist Corps. Signing up to be a member of the DU Activist Corps is simple:

1. You must be a registered member of Democratic Underground, and you must be logged in. If you are not registered or logged on, please do so now.

2. Just click this link to join the DU Activist Corps. It will automatically register you as a member.

3. At any time, you can check if you or someone else is a member of the DU Activist Corps by looking at their DU profile.

How many people have signed up?

You can check back to this post at any time to find out how many DUers have signed up for the DU Activist Corps.

Total Number of Activist Corps Members: 1455 (This number will update automatically.)

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them here.

208. This is the biggest fight in a generation. O'Conner's seat can literally
tip the court's balance in the wrong direction. Of the moderate/conservative justices, she is the worst to lose right now.

326. It's a friggin nightmare. Of course, Bush is going to put the most
extreme choice he can find. He has for every other position. Look at Bolton . . . still not confirmed (thank goodness).

The real nightmare will be when Rhenquist retires due to his illness, or God forbid, dies. The poor man is 80+ and being treated for thyroid cancer and STILL working everyday. I don't agree with his policy sometimes; however, IMHO, he is to be admired.

5. I've never been passive
Edited on Fri Jul-01-05 12:39 PM by wryter2000
But I've never thought of myself as an activist before. Can you give me an idea how much of a commitment it will take. I have some money I can donate (not much), and I have some time to write letters and e-mails. I'd like to take part, but I don't want to join and then drop the ball.

Is it possible to get more information before I join?

On edit: This is a fantastic idea.

10. We intend to be respectful of members's schedules.
We will not ask you to do something every day. If it's something simple (say, voting in an online poll) then time shouldn't be an issue. But if it's something that requires a little more time (writing a letter to the editor) we would only ask every week or so.

As I said in my post above: We understand that our members are busy and do not have unlimited time to devote to activism. We will be respectful of your time when new actions are posted -- probably once every few days.

6. Question: Is this online activism?
Would this involve online activism (emails, petition signing, etc.) or protesting, going to events, etc.? Or is it both?

8. It would mostly be online.
But it would likely include other types of activism that you can do from home: writing actual snail-mail letters to Senators or to local media, for example.

At the moment, we have no plans for this to include events or protesting.

WE ARE LIKELY TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

Voting in online polls.
Signing petitions.
Writing letters to Senators.
Writing letters to the Editor.
Sending emails to media.
Sending emails to friends.

WE ARE UNLIKELY TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

Go to protests.
Hold local events.

I've got idiotic physical and financial limitations, but my emailing capabilities are just fine and I use them, from sending thank yous for columns that voice our concerns, to signing petitions and goosing online polls. And writing uncheery little notes to my representatives.

Also, I have a little list of friends who regularly get info from me.

I'm an activist? Who knew?

Something caught my eye: "honor system". You know that word intrinsically incompatible with "honor"? Yup: "Freeper".

Shouldn't there be some kind of a filter to ensure that there aren't saboteurs involved in this? A post count minimum, for example -- since those are required even to post threads?

Count me in on the DU activist forum.

I don't post much, but I do send out lots of links from DU to my list of liberal friends here in the red MidWest. I don't like to post unless I have something great to add. Please don't automatically assume lurkers are BAD. DU is like my daily newspaper- I just don't send a letter to the editor every day in the form of a DU post.

I'd like to change my screen name to LurkinLibral but then my post total would really be low again.

26. I'm in.
I'm ready to do whatever it takes. I've been stewing in my own anger and fear since I found out about O'Connor's resignation. If I don't take this energy and direct it to actual action I will most likely go insane at this point.

36. I will pin it later.
For now, I want to let it float a little, because I think more people are likely to see it that way. Once the inital interest dies down, I'll pin it to the top.

104. Skinner's call, of course, but I would have concerns about this
Depending on what you mean by "wiring" the two together. I'm not at all sure I would approve of every PDA position on things. Sorry, but that's the way it is given some of the history I'm aware of.

I am going on my honeymoon in about a week and a half and will be out of the country. I would LOVE to do this, but don't want to be gone for 10 days and find my account deactivated because I hadn't participated during that time frame.

You would just be listed as an inactive member of the Activist Corps. When you come back from vacation, you can jump right back in and become an active member again.

352. OK I committed myself.... can I suggest a future Activist Action?
D.C. - United for Peace and Justice - 9/24-26/2005
(Affectionately known on DU as an "Impeachment Party" - Let's INVITE EVERYONE!!)

http://impeachbush.meetup.com/boards/view/viewthread?thread=1429154

<snip>
Hold Bush & Congress Accountable for the Deaths, the Destruction,
the Lies, and the Toll on Our Communities

Schedule of Events:
Sat., 9/24 - Massive March, Rally & Festival
Sun., 9/25 - Interfaith Service, Grassroots Training
Mon., 9/26 - Lobby Day, Mass Nonviolent Direct Action and Civil Disobedience

We can combine with 4,500 other Sponsors and bring many of our 70,000 to Washington DC that weekend to give "them" a demonstration that "they" can't ignore. (Whether "they" is the MSM, Press or administration (who could look at over 1/2 a million signatures and call John Conyer's request for accountability on the DSM "old news.")

Individually we can get out in our communities and get the word out to local activist organizations as well. If each DU Activists tells 10 other organizations about this and gets even one to sign on to it, we will be able to increase by about 1/5th the entire present sponsorship amount. If MoveOn isn't involved already, maybe they should be as well.

We need a 5 Million Man-Woman-Child March to NAIL the MESSAGE on the DOOR of the WHITE HOUSE that WE THE PEOPLE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF LIES AND MISMANAGEMENT OF THIS NATION - WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK! BUSHco GO HOME! NOW!!!!

I'm thinking we can "man" a nearby hotel room/suite or rent a bus or a motorhome to serve as the base of DemocraticUnderground participaiton in this event.

We can prepare some shout outs ahead of time and bring megaphones, signs etc... "WE THE PEOPLE" "DEMAND JUSTICE" "DO YOU HEAR US?" "MR BUSH" Combining with all these other agencies I have this crazy dream of 5 Million People in DC shouting loud enough to rumble buildings and set off car alarms for miles.

Here is the list of those groups that have already signed on:

if someone is already doing all the stuff you're talking about on their own, but hungers for the power of getting together and bringing our collective DU weight to bear physically on the issue at a protest that could work too, but it wouldn't be something expected of Level I.

47. OK, I'll bite, too...
I just finished my "College Student Success" course, and one of the goals on my 5 year plan was to become more active in progressive politics. Since I'm already a DU'er and spend part of my day here every day, this is perfect. I'm in the rural south, so I can participate without having to travel. I like and believe in DU.
I want desperately to do SOMETHING to change this country for the better. I saw what DU was able to do to help the people up in East Waynesville during the church flap, and even though I knew how great DU was, I was impressed. So yes, sign me up!

As an aside, I've been wanting to apologize for never having donated; I'm going to school now (at age 46) because I was laid off (2 days after the election). Even though I'm a secretary, I was classified as a Trade Affected Worker, which made me eligible for retraining. It's my 3rd layoff since the shrub was installed the first time. In other words, I'm kinda broke and likely to be for another 2 years, while I'm in school. It's got the up side that in 2 years I'll have a paralegal degree, but it will take some determination on my part.

I do have one question: Are you going to take more than 500 people if you get them, or are you cutting off at 500? Because I don't want to prevent from joining some of the other members who are so much more worthy of the honor and may want to join. I'm not trying to be smarmy here, I mean that sincerely...so if I sign up and someone who's a 1000+ and gold star member wants in, I don't want them left out instead of me!!!

51. We're going to take as many people as we can get.
500 is the minimum number of people we feel is necessary to get this idea off the ground. But we're going to keep signing people up well after that point. I'm hoping for 10,000!

111. Your Profile...
It's super close to my own, liberty! :hi:

Working into my Bachelors right now and we're even very close in age! You probably can relate - College is really hard at our age.

Since Bubblehead took office I've watched my late-husband's pension go from fully-vested (respectable amount for me to live on with some dignity) to "ZERO!" And some... When I asked... "What happened to all the decades, years, hours he worked paying-in extra, just so I'd be ok if I survived him and I did, sadly, something he always worried about more then himself) the local benefit hall said "Ask your President."

My Response: "I didn't vote for the ba#$ard!"

Ok... Signed-up. Awaiting orders.
Been doing this anyway on my own out here. Might as well be for good of us all!

53. I think we need to bring it into the real world.. use DU to organize,
but we need to get out and meet up! I was thinking of this, and am considering hosting a DU party here in DC. We are the DU'ers on the front lines.. if we can get enough people in the DC area, we can organize our own marches.. and bolster the marches of thers we agree with.. we can bring protesters to the streets, never underestimate this!

We can have sponser a protester fund raisers.. so if you can make it, you can sponser someone to carry your name, or a sign for you...

I'm sure many other ideas will form as we gather, grow and learn.

71. Suggestion: Admins. Activist HQ should be "protected" area on DU.
As with other groups I belong to, certain areas are special password only for obvious reasons. While certainly someone could slip under the radar and sign up as an activist to gain access to the info, it seems that it should be a protected area on DU to make it more efficient.

Still trying to see if there is a way I can fit into the Activist Corps here... after being here at DU for 4 years or so, I'd like to give back, so to speak.

We will do it if it becomes apparent that there are problems with our current approach. But my preference is that we not make any effort to hide the activist opportunities. We have many more lurkers than we do registered members.

It's something I've yearned for DU to do and (early on) wondered why it hadn't been doing it, for quite a while now. A point of focus and central organizing point are critically important, else activism efforts too easily get scattered. Well done.

have been doing this already it does give an "extra push" to commeraderie...which has been lacking for awhile...with the big influx of new members those of us who are activists often felt overwhelmed or ignored...unless one was in a clique. (Not disparaging about DU Clique's but if one doesn't belong to a "clique" an "activism post" or "alert" can get little attention.

It's nice to see this effort. :-)'s

2)i'm canadian. we're very helpful and industrious :bounce: , but there are limits as to what we can do productively. writing senators and editors is less effective from a hoser than a hoosier, eh. perhaps you could have a canuck task force or something, so we can focus more on organizing and assisting you citizens of empire to get your voices heard. i dunno, this is just a thought.

3)re. adding identifiers to profiles. fine idea and all. just don't let it turn into another clique-wedge. already, heated-up arguments often turn into "yeah, well i did X, what have YOU ever done". if folks start droppin trou to compare activisms, fire them.

those were my comments.

123. Love the FOCUS
I also agree that the forum shouldn't be password protected because lurkers may want to participate in some of the general activist campaigns.

Seems simple enough as it won't require us to leave our desks/chairs.. I am in.

I really like this idea as it will enable those of us who aren't so familiar with activism to learn all the techniques and support those of you who are experts.... I'm in.

126. letter I'm working on
A threat to our environment

Right-wingers see a perfect opportunity now that Justice O'Connor has retired to appoint another member that will further their agenda of weakening our federal protection for our environment. Mr. Bush is most likely to select a judge in the clothing of William Myers, who believes that environmental laws are unconstitutional and a detriment to private property rights. Mr. Bush has undermined public health protections in the name of protecting industry by rolling back clean air and water standards, ignoring global warming, hindering clean up of toxic waste dumps, turning the Environmental Protection Agency into one that prostitutes the environment, and most alarmingly withholding or even changing key scientific evidence and reports to fit their needs. Environmental laws are anathema to these types who believe that these laws increase the cost of business. Conservatives believe that this cuts into business profits and that the lack of environmental laws in the past was tied to massive economic growth, but do not see the human cost of millions of workers who with their children have been exposed to the effects of polluted workplaces.

Bush needs to appoint a nominee that is acceptable to liberals if he wants to avoid another filibuster showdown. Those on the right want a Bush lackey who will rubber stamp every bit of their agenda without question. Republicans believe that they have a "mandate" to obtain such a nominee. Instead Bush should look towards a candidate more towards the center, a moderate who will show independence and not toe the party line.

Also, for me and my other computer illiterate comrades, I have never understood what Demopedia is for or how to use it. If the information is listed there, I won't be the able to access it. (I may be the only one that will ADMIT it, but not the only that can't do it.)

As someone upthread mentioned, I'm a bit nervous about signing up for something and then dropping the ball, but I'm here alot and I already send emails from time to time when the fit takes me. 142. Please pin the big movement Los Angeles is starting: THE SUMMER OF PROTEST
Thank you, Skinner, for finally making this forum more activist-friendly. As someone who gets aggravated with the "all talk, no action" trend at DU, its relieving to know that we activists will finally be getting some organization around here.

CODEPINK LA and ImpeachCentral are working together to start a SUMMER OF PROTEST movement, which we hope will catch on quickly throughout the country. afterdowningstreet.org gave us credit for "setting the standard" and we're well aware that what California does the country follows.

All it takes is ONE PERSON to decide to start it in their area and invite all area groups to participate. Using the same movement name across the country is reminiscent of the successful strategy of the Civil Rights movement -- and we sincerely hope that THE SUMMER OF PROTEST earns a place in history.

Here was the thread I started in the California forum about it (got all of one unrelated response, so again I thank you): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=141x11601

Here is a blog established for THE SUMMER OF PROTEST:

http://summerofprotest.blogspot.com/

Here is the text from that blog and the announcements that we've sent out:

Attention citizens of the Los Angeles:

Our SUMMER OF PROTEST is here. We will continue to set the standard for protesting against the Bush administration's lies, illegal wars, torture, and war profiteering.

Every Saturday afternoon at 3:00, throughout the summer and possibly beyond, we will be protesting outside of media outlets. Since the news refuses to inform the public, the public will start informing the news that we won't allow the coverups to continue. We will SHAME them into covering our protests and expose them for not covering the real issues!

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND COME OUT TO THE WEEKLY PROTESTS.

We made major progress with our After Downing Street Rally at KTLA & KCBS this month, even getting our rally covered the same night on the KTLA Primetime News and getting a KCBS newsvan out to interview us. We will kick off our SUMMER OF PROTEST at KTLA & KCBS again this Saturday, July 2nd and keep this location throughout the month of July. In August, we will be targetting CNN News, also on Sunset.

After Downing St. Rally at KTLA: This rally was convened to support the hearings convened by Rep. Conyers and over 100 other Members of Congress to investigate the Downing St. Minutes.

Organizations and individuals wishing to endorse the SUMMER OF PROTEST, please leave a comment to be added to our list of organizations to be announced later.

What do you mean by "serious commitment"? What does "signing on the dotted line" involve? I am committed to making a difference, but I also have a commitment to my full time job, as I am sure many DUers do. I am very interested, but I'd like to know what sort of activism is necessary. I can't sign up and then find out I have to be out doing things during my work week, sorry. Oh, and I do not have a computer at home, would that stop me from signing up? Thanks!

We intend to focus on activism that can be done from home.

So it looks like it will not take you away from your job.

153. Question...
Hi there. I've been around DU about everyday since I found your site (shortly after moving from Italy to US, about 2 years ago). I never post 'cause my english is less than perfect, but I surelly can vote on polls on line, and go to protests if such is the case. I knocked doors for Kerry last november... we won the state... but that wasn't enough. That's why I want to sign in! I want to ask: I'm not a citizen, and I can't even vote. Is that a problem?

and don't worry about posting. If you have been around here for two years you will have noticed that 'english less than perfect' describes many of us.

Again welcome.

283. The Democracy Cell Project has activists in those states.
The easiest way to contact them is to register there, in the forum http://www.democracycellproject.net/forum/index.php?act=Reg&CODE=00 and then go to "my cell" and post there that you have a group or are looking for a group http://www.democracycellproject.net/forum/index.php?showforum=24 OR you could also post in the "action alerts" section http://www.democracycellproject.net/forum/index.php?showforum=121 You could even go into the "live chat" and talk to your fellow activist there; you can get advice; and you can ask questions when you run into a stone wall. (Which take my word for it--I've run into stone walls now that I am an official "muckraker"!

This is one way how the Democracy Cell Project and D.U. are really symbiotic in nature. The communication is already set up at Democracy Cell Project and DU has large numbers. The Democracy Cell Project helps train people for activism and gives them the tools to be effective advocates for change. We are both on the same side--we want a democratic government and not fascism!

I'd also like to say, I am in no way trying to steal Skinner's or D.U.'s thunder here. I LOVE that he is getting this going. I firmly believe that the Democracy Cell Project and D.U. can work together to create, as Jessie Jackson said, "A more perfect union."

175. for us non-USAns
Congratulations on the plan, of course. And this note is meant for future consideration, once the plan itself is finalized and operational.

There's a good number of furriners here, and we might sometimes be useful. But it would be my position that there are also things we oughta keep our faces out of.

(That's why there are polls at DU in which I don't "vote", f'r instance, just on principle. Some things aren't my business, and some polls I shouldn't try to influence the numbers in.)

Maybe, down the line, you could consider two classes of membership in the corps. You citizens and residents of the US would be first class members, and we others would be something like associate activists. If an action was appropriate for us to be involved in -- like, say, something having to do with US foreign policy -- then we'd be notified and invited and recognized for contributing.

Basically, there are things USAmerican in which the rest of the world should have voice, even though we don't get vote -- while when it comes to how you people organize your social security system and the like, we should take a friendly interest and of course offer all the advice we like, but not butt in. ;)

I'm glad you have this open to anyone, because my count is mighty low...I'm generally pretty awed by the regulars, and can't really think of anything relevant to add!

If any DU'ers in San Francisco would like to get together in person, though, that would be great! I've done this a few times with MoveOn, and the energy is wonderful, and sanity inducing!

Thanks for instigating this!:yourock:

203. Have camera will travel
I hope that I can be of assistance, maybe create neccessary Flash animations (approved of course) and get them out there using DU'rs and my contacts to spread the word - like Will Pitt said we can pool resources in a way, and I appreciate what Eloriel said in that not all people may agree with the views of others, I can understand how that would be a problem in some ways.

I just got back from filming the Conyers Hearing in DC and now have footage that the Media cannot spin. As I gain more footage in the future (and the manager in the Judiciary Office wants me to cover more important events) I think that we could join forces to get the word out with Video, etc - maybe create a "house party" DVD that people could donate to the DU and receive something they could use like the MoveOn folks are doing.. I recently received an email where the MoveOn folks are talking about showing films at these house parties - there's no reason why WE at the DU can't make something like that and get it out to EVERYONE.

So I've signed up, but I'd like to work with DU in a more oblique fashion, in my own way, at my pace since I have a very full plate in many ways..

Is that possible? I'm not saying that I can't do most of the things it appears that are needed as a DU activist, I'm just saying that I may have more to add to the mix.

In any case, this a brilliant Idea, and more sites need to do this until we have a UNION of the Original 13 Cyber Colonies like I've been saying for a long time :)

Exactly, I really don't make any money for what I do, the fine folks who donated for the Conyers video basically paid me back for my rent money which I took a chance on making back.

Video/editing/DVD production and distribution is very expensive so when I make offers like before and in the future for the most part I'm also making a donation of my time as well, which I don't mind at all as it's for the cause.

I've been making animations on TBTM for years for free, tho we did get ARMY OF ONE made into a 30 and 60 second commercial and a rich pal put up the bucks to run it all over cable during New Hampshire's Primaries, etc..

It even got shown on national tv BEFORE the actual winner of the Bush in 30 seconds contest was released (I was on Joe Scarborough's show the next day where they aired ARMY OF ONE, and he kissed my butt, knowing that if he made one misstep I was going to hit him with, "Gee Joe, it sounds like you're not supporting the troops.." :) ) we were one of the 14 finalists in the MoveOn event.

If anyone wants to see the show here's the link to that, I have no fear at all of going on tv and playing with these guys, the first time Joe had me on the show he threatened to turn of my microphone :)

Link works, it will say it doesn't but click on it again and it will run: http://66.230.230.110/radio/sym-1-13.rm it's a real media file.

House Parties are where it's at, and you can push other progressive films and actions at the end as well.

Right now I'm thinking of reducing the Conyers Hearing/Rally to a 30 minute piece and getting it out there at near cost so that people can use it for the house party scene...

"Takebackthemedia and DemocraticUnderground.com Presents" has a nice ring to it :)

207. How will the "causes" be chosen? I spend a lot of my DU time (other than
reading and catching up) composing and posting (and posting at other sites) on causes I think are extremely important and yet under the radar. I would want to be able to suggest causes like this for consideration. It seems to me that this is the most vulnerable point - how are "causes" going to be chosen for activism and more important, how are other potentially important causes passed over? I would have no problem writing LTTEs and such on causes I was asked to support, but I would also want to be sure causes that I feel need attention get it.

So my greatest concern about this new endeavor is that it could detract from the ability to raise interest in "non-approved" projects. If all 500 or 10,000 of the people who are most likely to actually DO something, spread the word, write LTTEs, are following marching orders on the "recommended" causes, I'm afraid that these under-the-radar causes will fall through the cracks.

It's one of the great strengths of DU to be able to rouse interest and at least the possibility of action on many causes that are NOT the ones that are most often heard about. I wouldn't want to lose that strength while taking advantage of the ability to storm the gates on the issues that are better known.

(Like many others here, I also have some physical disabilities and I can't promise to always do something the same day it is requested.)

Any comments on this, Skinner? What about keeping the ability to bring important but under-publicized issues to the attention of DUers? And will there be a special forum for posting on these under-reported causes? Some of them are EXTREMELY important, like some truly sinister legislation that is on its way through the House. (I'm thinking of HR 1316, but there are others.) And the practice of CIA extraordinary rendition. And many others.

211. There are big fish to fry and little ones to saute
I'm sure that the DU admin can recognize the fights that are most important at the time, frankly I've seen MoveOn go after battles that are sure to lose a lot of money and waste some time.. (props to MoveOn for all they do, I'm not dissing them)..

But yeah, I see problems that Takebackthemedia.com wants to go after on a smaller scale but very important, like why the Troops are subjected to FOX tv while in the field, and forced to listen to Limbaugh on the ARMED FORCES RADIO Network - we are considering an action to demand that Air America Radio get equal time on the air since Limbaugh is being shoved down their throats, etc..

Still, like Skinner said, there are BIG issues that need to be dealt with NOW, taking the gloves off and getting out the 20 lb sledge hammer.

Good point - tho I'm sure the admin is figuring out which are the good fights, etc.

including helping to coordinate the release of their book on the West Coast.

DU is much more interactive -- creates many more opportunities for real input than MoveON ever did. Peace, Wes and Joan, they took on a LOT and made a difference. May be right now in some developmental cul de sac.

I'm really excited about what DU's potential.

214. I would like to see a special place set aside for a sort of smorgasbord of
important causes. There would be the ones that we work on all together, all activists sending LTTEs or whatever about a particular issue, and then there would be this smorgasbord. Here people could CHOOSE causes that grab their own passionate interest.

Some will be worthy of wide interest and support though they are currently almost unknown:

Example - if HR 1316 passes, "bought" elections will become legal. See here;
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1847357
Thread title: Email your Reps to STOP H.R. 1316, the "Make Congress More Corrupt" Bill
(It passed out of committee into the full House earlier this month. If it looks like a vote will be taken, we MUST act. You will not BELIEVE the provisions of this bill.)

Others will incite passionate interest in fewer people who are already atuned to the subject matter, say a particular environmental cause, or one targetted to elderly people, or to a limited area of the country.

These need to be put where they will get high visibility by people who might do something to support them, not just have to be posted over and over where they are not seen or, if they are, fall off the Greatest page after a day so that the process has to be done again and again.

So people who want to DO somthing coud be "official" activists on the "offical" projects and also be able to browse the smorgasbord for causes that appeal to them.

Getting late here and I'm rambling. I hope you can make out what I am trying to say.

If the Admins are going to pick a few projects for full DU support, I think we should have a way of assuring that OTHER projects, not chosen by the Admins, get what support they can.

233. I think part of the trouble
Edited on Sat Jul-02-05 04:56 AM by symbolman
is that people respond to "web/news bytes" and everyone wants to be heard so the potential for action, even if someone is doing something, gets lost in the hubbub of 30 threads with three posts of folks that agree with that person.

or the "Is Dean GAY?" (only an example, never been posted as far as I'm aware) kind of sensational dreck that gets everyone spitting mad or confused or demanding links for proof, etc that in the end drown out real progress.

In a lot of cases the cream does rise to the top, as in Andy's sickness, etc and that's a good thing.

I've come to the decision that this whole country is in the grips of a PR war. So I believe that however much marching in the streets we do, if it doesn't get reported it has no effect. But that well placed PR, sometimes even nutty but fun - but it must be truthful & educational, can have a direct impact and get all eyes on a wrong, so many that the perpetrators back away from the "cookie jar" (crime, treasury, unneccessary deaths) slowly to save their political lives.

When I was reviewing the filming of Conyers & Crew at the WHite House gate and saw all the video cameras ON THE LAWN behind the fence, and then all the video cameras BEHIND Conyers - THEN the White House accepting the 560,000 signatures & 122 Congressmen sigs - that's when I realised that the power of PR is really in the hands of the people.

We need to arm ourselves with cameras, film injustice (as the camera doesn't lie) and shove it in their faces, the more cameras the better - they HAD to accept the papers at the White House as they knew that the WEB if nothing else had the ability to SHOW their arrogance and Now news trickles from the Web to the MSM because THEY are lazy and overpaid, passionless, while WE have a COMMUNITY that desires truth, facts, etc

CNN can't PAY enough people to have a 60,000 member investigative force like the DU. WIth all the talent here -

We can OWN THEM.

Let's get those bastards, ALL of us have some talent that meshes with the others until we are unassailable - more people need to sign up, send letters, pass work along to others who can do what you can't do that day..

We can build a something to rival the Pyramids and remember, they were built with one brick at a time.

Now, everyone pick up ONE BRICK.

(and thanks for helping MoveOn on a daily basis!)

Maybe we need a Media strike force here at the DU as well - we DO need someone to give ALL the Progressive websites marching orders so we can move in Lockstep (an agreed upon overarching editorial board of progressive web masters) - Say, "TODAY all websites and Blogs need to mention ROVE IN CHAINS and Hammer it" (until the MSM PICKS IT UP) - "Tomorrow we hammer on the DSM" - if we do it, it will happen, I've seen it. Off the soapbox now, just excited by Skinner's post :)

245. What a great post, Symbolman! I strongly agree with you. BUT -
Edited on Sat Jul-02-05 09:55 AM by Nothing Without Hope
...my concern is that there are many causes that require attention and we need to be aware of them. Yes, i'm sure important ones will be chosen for the "lockstep" response. But I don't want that to overwhelm and drown out the OTHER important causes.

There SHOULD be a way to harness the power of DU and other internet communities as Skinner is proposing. It's a grand idea and, given the dark state of things and the expectations for worse, it's essential. However, we also need to make plans and organize positively IN ADDITION TO the fighting we have to do. Yes, the fighting is essential, but we also have to plan and brainstorm, help create and encourage the positive alternatives to the horrors of the Bush administration. We have to coax the public to join in, and we want MORE than their anger, we want their HOPE and positive, forward-looking energy. Otherwise we will see apathy and despair.

Hence my concern that we not have a system here that is pushing ONLY "the cause of the week." Yes, that has to be done, but it's not enough. There are other things that have to be fought against, education campaigns - first for us and then for the public - on little-known but vital issues like horrible legislation or secret criminal policies, and there has to be brainstorming and gestating of practical, positive plans, ideas, projects for the future. We can't be one-dimensional. Yes, we have to fight the urgent fights together, but we also have to keep our eyes open at the wider picture.

I don't want the "cause of the week" approach to reduce the ability to gather response, interest and awareness of other important issues.

225. I've been here
for a few months as a very faithful reader and have often wished there was a daily "to do" list because there is so much information that it often gets overwhelming to know which petitions are most important to sign and which letters should be written!
If you decide to only let those with a certain number of posts to be members, I understand. But it would be helpful if there were, on the homepage, a "Most Important Things to do Today" list so that all DU members, AC members or not, could simply click on and make sure their voice is heard. Speaking for myself, there have been things that have come up that I've been like "shit, how'd I miss that?".
Anyway, thanks for all you do! I love DU and I've learned alot from you all!

242. I have an idea for once you get your 500 committed people and that is
to have a "second" tier of volunteers which can be the "boots on the ground" willing to carry out tasks being organized and led by the core group. I would be willing to do something like that, but for a variety of reasons, including a rather high profile corporate job, I can't do more at the risk of being "uncovered."

I'm sure there are many similar people.

255. re: boots on ground, offline activism
This type of discussion of the extension of the project is critical.

I understand when people are in employment situations that
preclude activism offline so to speak, and so we need to
find people willing to be visible offline in dissent.

I am an educator, a tenured professor, and one of the things that
has absolutely floored and disillusioned me is the absence of
dissent on American University campuses.

I support the moveon.org styled neighborhood organizations, but
there is a void in seeding campuses with dissent.

We need national teach-out days, we need to do some old
fashion sit-ins in administration buildings. We need an online
source book for the lesson plans on DSM, etc.

In the old days when you marched you got in groups--union there, students there--it doesn't always make sense, but sometimes it does.

So my suggestion is start building in a way to create offline ad-hoc groups such as educators to facilitate broader actions.

This is the area in which I would like to help beyond the checkbook sign the petition route, as meaningful as that stuff is.

you head on over to the Mozilla site and pick up on either Mozilla (which I happen to like and use) or Firefox. These are built around Netscape and are updated and easier to use, as well as being more powerful. Ya' might enjoy them.
I have used Mozilla for a long time, now, and have had no problems with any release or beta test version, finding them very user friendly and well documented.

Although I may not post regularly, I have been lurking at DU since the early days - and have participated in many a call to action, although not participating in board discussions very much whatsoever.

DU has proven to be an awesome source of information and support. There are a number of great people here who make it such a fantastic place.

I'll wager there are quite a few other low-post count lurkers and newbies who undoubtedly feel the same way.

I hope that more of them will also join in this call to action.

271. DemocracycellProject.net has doing what you are talking about

for about the past year. It is a site dedicated to the cybercommunity of Activists. There is a forum where people can post their activities. We share ideas via the net and provided feedback and communicate ideas. The forum has a book chat and other unique features. There is a chat room for instantaneous conversation. The blog supplies thoughful subject threads and posts. The Democracy Cell Project (DCP) is a non-profit organization with a bold approach to using online communications to integrate, educate, and include the millions of people across America who are ready to work for a more democratic country. The DCP is dedicated to assisting individuals and communities to tighten their messages, build coalitions, and organize on the ground to make political change a reality. The DCP provides leadership in developing messages and organizing from the ground up. Through its website, the DCP hosts a learning community, giving activists access to the tools and the train-ing they need to mobilize and activate their own democracy cells. At the Democracy Cell Project, we value your advice and your ideas. You are our partners in making this site as useful as it can possibly be. With your participation, we will build a site that will help people everywhere be more effective fighters for a more democratic country. Visit it, I think you will find exactly what we need for a cybercommunity of activists who are already making a diffence. We could use more.

<SALUTES>

Members of the Democratic Underground Activist Corps:

My name is Neerav Trivedi. I am already a registered member of Democratic Underground, and I have also joined your ranks in the Democratic Underground Activist Corps (DUAC). I have already been involved in an mass e-mail campaign with a couple of friends from Conyers Blog for the past month or so (which I am still doing today). My main area is the Iraq War, so anything related to that can be done by me and my people, which I ma doing via that e-mail campaign at the moment. I will try to recruit people from there into the Democratic Underground Activist Corps, if possible.

General Skinner, I await your orders. My name and e-mail address should already be in the Democratic Underground's database of registered members, which I assume you have access to at any time as an Admin.

Please give me my first marching orders as soon as possible after the Fourth of July Weekend, and I will get to work on it immediately.

Please keep in mind that I will be frequently updating you here in the Democratic Underground Activist Coprs (DUAC) on my progress, both on a weekly basis and after each activity that I have been assigned to do have been completed. These updates will happen ONLY on the forum related to the Activist Corps. In addition, any ideas or suggestions that I have that can help us to enhance our performance will be suggested by myself on this forum as well. Either way, you will hear from me often, possibly every day.

Until then, be well, be active, and have a safe and happy Fourth of July to you and your family!!!

In the name of American Freedom & Democracy...........
<SALUTES>

291. an excellent idea
possibly a loose quota of number of actions participated in as a percentage (say 20%) as a minimum of online actions requested would keep person in good standing. I know it's cheezy, but having some objective standard makes someone feel comfortable, and others feel motivated.

I don't know what the procedure is for (a) proposing actions and(b) approving them. Do you support UFPJ -- links to various issues, like Zach in Tenn (gay teen incarcerated ...), or various people locked up (civil libs -- Guantanamo, possible links to desperate AI issues), groups working on Sudan, on Iraq War, on environment and energy, and so on. I suppose you will pursue actions you know the vast majority of DU people will unreservedly support. I hope that at least baseline support for peace movement is a REGULAR part of it.

I'm an expat living in Canada - so all of your actions may not be applicable, however, there are some cases where I may be able to do things others cannot or may hear about things others do no - also through other groups I can instantly relay information to several hundred others, in Canada, The US, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Asia.

There also may be times when I am out of town and cannot respond quickly to activities. Let me know if I can be useful to you.

PS: I, also, am a smoker so you may want to take that into consideration before contacting me. I don't mind stepping outside to smoke; however, I know the smell stays on my clothing, and I wouldn't want to offend anyone with allergies like myself. FYI just in case.

Kindest regards,

306. We're focusing on activism you can do online or from home.
We're not asking members to do any travel.

325. Okay then, I'll give it a try. I have plenty of time. People for the
American Way, Amnesty International, DNC, and UNICEF have about broke me this year so I have time to give but no more money (well, except for a little for DU, of course, lol).

Okay then hook me up.

Follow the directions in my post that starts this thread. That will register you as a member of the activist corps.

303. I've never stopped being an activist since the 60's....
I don't see any reason to stop now, the stakes are higher than they've ever been. This incredibly crooked cabal in the White House has MANY things to be held accountable for and if we don't hold their feet to the fire, who will? . Count me in. :hippie:

time to make my "little" efforts for democracy count for more, and pool my resources. I've been a DU member almost from the beginning, mostly lurking. Time to get it in gear and be the change I want to see!

Otherwise, I'm a pretty decent writer and artist, although I haven't done any serious artwork in quite awhile. Maybe I should heal up a bit more...?

We're focusing on activism that people can do from home, on their computers or by snail mail. If you are able to post on DU, then you should be able to help out with the activist corps.

I would really like to become more involved, especially living in a red state! But do have other obligations.

3-5 hours a week - you bet I'm in...
