Am I the only person to have a "physical reaction" to Bush?
Seriously. I hear "President Bush" and my ears and cheeks burn. When I see him via TV, my abdomen gets tight and my heart rate goes up. When I listen to him, my forehead tightens, my teeth grind and my temples hurt.

I have NEVER had such physical reactions to any human being in my entire life!!! To me, such an experience is totally new and strange.

Am I the only person who is having - has had this experience with any particular person?

1. I have the same thing.
When he comes on the radio in a news report or something, I switch it off as fast as I can. He is not welcome in my home (or my car).

107. I can't listen to him in the car...
If I hear his voice, I'm filled with such revulsion that if another vehicle with any sort of "W" or Neoclannish stickers on it drives by when I'm suffering from fits of Shrub-induced rage and nausea, they run the risk of being cursed out and flipped off at the very least. It's like a terrible fog in front of my eyes.

I've never felt such revulsion for a person before, even when I was on Shore Patrol and helped bring in a child molester. Perhaps because the damage he uncaringly causes to innocents is so much worse over a wider scale.

110. Same here
It's the fastest I move when he or his voice appear.

As for pictures in newspapers, I keep a Sharpie handy and simply black him out.

Yes, it's a visceral and intense reaction. I can see a picture of Hitler and have the same reaction.

ANNALS OF PSYCHOLOGY
The Naked Face
Can you read people's thoughts just by looking at them?

<snip> Early in his career, Paul Ekman filmed forty psychiatric patients, including a woman named Mary, a forty-two-year-old housewife. She had attempted suicide three times, and survived the last attempt—an overdose of pills—only because someone found her in time and rushed her to the hospital. Her children had left home and her husband was inattentive, and she was depressed. When she first went to the hospital, she simply sat and cried, but she seemed to respond well to therapy. After three weeks, she told her doctor that she was feeling much better and wanted a weekend pass to see her family. The doctor agreed, but just before Mary was to leave the hospital she confessed that the real reason she wanted to go on weekend leave was so that she could make another suicide attempt. Several years later, a group of young psychiatrists asked Ekman how they could tell when suicidal patients were lying. He didn't know, but, remembering Mary, he decided to try to find out. If the face really was a reliable guide to emotion, shouldn't he be able to look back on the film and tell that she was lying? Ekman and Friesen began to analyze the film for clues. They played it over and over for dozens of hours, examining in slow motion every gesture and expression. Finally, they saw it. As Mary's doctor asked her about her plans for the future, a look of utter despair flashed across her face so quickly that it was almost imperceptible.

Ekman calls that kind of fleeting look a "microexpression," and one cannot understand why John Yarbrough did what he did on that night in South Central without also understanding the particular role and significance of microexpressions. Many facial expressions can be made voluntarily. If I' m trying to look stern as I give you a tongue-lashing, I'll have no difficulty doing so, and you' ll have no difficulty interpreting my glare. But our faces are also governed by a separate, involuntary system. We know this because stroke victims who suffer damage to what is known as the pyramidal neural system will laugh at a joke, but they cannot smile if you ask them to. At the same time, patients with damage to another part of the brain have the opposite problem. They can smile on demand, but if you tell them a joke they can't laugh. Similarly, few of us can voluntarily do A.U. one, the sadness sign. (A notable exception, Ekman points out, is Woody Allen, who uses his frontalis, pars medialis, to create his trademark look of comic distress.) Yet we raise our inner eyebrows all the time, without thinking, when we are unhappy. Watch a baby just as he or she starts to cry, and you'll often see the frontalis, pars medialis, shoot up, as if it were on a string.

26. Scientists Say Everyone Can Read Minds
I can't listen to him,
I have to press the mute button and read the captions.

Here's a news story related to yours.

http://www.livescience.com/humanbiology/050427_mind_readers.html

Scientists Say Everyone Can Read Minds
...
In 1996, three neuroscientists were probing the brain of a macaque monkey when they stumbled across a curious cluster of cells in the premotor cortex, an area of the brain responsible for planning movements. The cluster of cells fired not only when the monkey performed an action, but likewise when the monkey saw the same action performed by someone else. The cells responded the same way whether the monkey reached out to grasp a peanut, or merely watched in envy as another monkey or a human did.

Because the cells reflected the actions that the monkey observed in others, the neuroscientists named them "mirror neurons."

Later experiments confirmed the existence of mirror neurons in humans and revealed another surprise. In addition to mirroring actions, the cells reflected sensations and emotions.

32. She didn't say "read minds". She referred to visceral reactions.
Two completely distinct notions: reading minds and visceral reactions.

However, your exploration into the potential of the human mind is always an interesting one. We haven't a clue about our potential. If we did, humans would no longer wage violence and death upon other humans,...they would preserve the environment which preserves their lives,...they would know their capacity to recreate reality.

Hence, we have a LONG way to go before expanded capacity of the human mind can be demonstrated.

I'm not sure hnow her post was misleading to you.

However, I will say this about her post,...there are people who observe, whether intentionally or not, the "actions" of other people vis-a-vis physical signals or by behavior.

I interpret what I "SEE",...which is apparently an odditity in this human existence.

11. no. my blood pressure literally goes up whenever i see the cretin on tele
vision, and i too, switch the channel, (or sometimes i mute it to make myself endure his image on television and try to discern what his mood is--my reaction to the faces that he makes and the postures that he adopts, pretty much tell me whether he is angry,or abusively misusing facts, or lying ... --these are things that i can confirm either as i read the running stream on the television screen, or if there is no screen, these are things i can confirm when i read a transcript of what the cretin said.

Sometimes i wonder why i want to punish myself by looking at him ... but it has become a challenge for me to try and guess at his mood and what he might be saying based on the looks of his face.

And sometimes i keep the volume on even when my bloodpressure is going up ... just to hear him slur his words, or utter incoherences.

Gees. I wonder if there is a thread of masochism inside my soul.

I refuse to bash those who have been betrayed and used by this leader. They are NOT bad people. They are hurting like the rest of us,...struggling through COMMON human disappointments and suffering and confusion.

Transferring responsbility (blame-staking) is a mistake,...and is frequently used/manipulated by predators against victims or those who have no relationship to the inappropriate or illegal behavior engaged by the predator.

33. Just that *smirk* makes me feel like menopause on steroids.
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 06:39 PM by Sapphire Blue
... make that menopause on PCP. That *smirk*, that voice, that psychotic arrogance... I can't stand anything, NOT ANYTHING, NOT ONE DAMN THING, about that *%H$)(#$)$%*%*$!!! I flip the channel as soon as there's the slightest possibility of him desecrating my TV. If I don't do it quickly enough, I'm cussing up a blue streak in a way that would put a well traveled sailor to shame... and if my windows are open, the neighbors get an earful. (Keep in mind that if a man cusses in my presence, he typically excuses his indiscretion very politely... perhaps he thinks I might be offended) I am not typically foul-mouthed, but that WH Resident seems to bring this reaction out in me... quite vociferously.

My wish for that Fascist WH Thug is that, in his next incarnation, he return as a carbuncle in the anus of a Crohn's Disease patient with diarrhea (without medical insurance as a result of Thug's greedy, filthy policies).

34. Fascinating. I knew I wasn't COMPLETELY alone when I ran across,...
,...a friend of mine, yesterday. When I mentioned my disgust at the Bush administration, her whole physical demeanor completely changed from overall relaxed and content to tense and angered.

I observed, "Look at us. Look at our reaction to the mention of Bush. Look at our bodies. Isn't that weird?" She suggested that it's simply foresight and experience reacting to blind power-mongering. Still, we both took note at observable physical reactions,...which were amazing: a complete joinder of cognitive intention and behavioral influence, right there.

I had The Mountain (a nice liberal radio station) on and they mentioned that there would be a news conference tonight. One of the personalities said he loved these news conferences. The other, with some revulsion in her voice, asked why. He said that after * does his prepared remarks, he usually wanders off script and it's hilarious. He did some really scathing imitations of same.

I love the Mountain. I will not, as usual, be watching the comedy. You fine folks here will point out the amusing and the "important". He was the Governor of my state once. Didn't like him then, despise him now.

Reagan annoyed me, but it was Nancy that really rubbed me the wrong way. That slimeball congressman Drier grates on me like sandpaper. But nobody invokes the bile like Dubya.

116. No, it's not just you!
I go out of my way not to put myself in physical harm by seeing or hearing monkeyboy.

So, it's a surprise to me that * affects other people like that, too!

119. I cringe. I wince
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 10:10 PM by Donailin
and I imagine all the reporters must do the same. Quite frankly, I'm speechless when Bush talks -- I can't believe this moron is the POTUS. It boggles the mind when one thinks about it. He has like six talking points, that's all he can apparently commit to memeory. It's so embarassing.

And when he threw out that 'polls and focus group' bullshit,I wanted to punch him in the face. I'm the people, part of that "of the people for the people and by the people" focus group.

Fucking asshate, he is.

122. Voted for Bush?
I am curious if there is anyone out there that voted for Bush and now, realizing how incredibly brain dead they must have been at the time, have joined this fight to rid the world, the planet, the universe, of this evil man and his crime family?

ANYONE?

It's THOSE PEOPLE that we need to join us to have any chance at all, or am I am kidding myself that there is a chance?

I went to a protest yesterday, in the largest city in the US, Los Angeles, downtown at 5PM. The busiest time of day, on a week day, in front of the Court House, to protest the looming overturning of the filibuster. There were, maybe, 75 people there. Out of a city of HOW many millions?

Where are the people? The people that care? The people that become violently nauseated at the sound of him?

123. i get ill
physically ill. like an allergic reaction. nausea. I've discovered though, that if I don't actually turn it on, or if it is on if I turn the creep off, everything is fine.

So have the creeps actually made an on paper proposal for how they intend to f*ck social security, or is this just more bullshit in the never-ending game to con the democrats into initiating deform?

124. What you're all experiencing is a perfectly natural response...
To being confronted face-to-face with an ancient and formidable evil that is NOT OF THIS EARTH.
I've pointed this out before, how Bush can't get his own dog Barney to come anywhere near him; for me, this PROVES the old adage that DOGS CAN SENSE EVIL.
Also, even though it's technically a real marvel, there's just something about that rubber "human" mask he wears that doesn't look quite real, or looks TOO real, I'm not sure which...
I don't have such visceral reactions myself; I used to, but it's amazing what you can acclimate yourself to when survival is at stake... and besides, SOMEBODY'S gotta keep an eye on the demon; considering what he's been willing to do right out in the open, with cameras rolling and all, who knows what he might try if we looked away for more than a couple seconds?
I am most offended by his obvious ignorance and indifference to others' opinions or needs, and that ugly fuckin' monkey-smirk of his; he seems to smirk most when he's sowing some new horrible mischief...
He is devouring the very future of humanity right before our eyes.

I can't really blame anyone for turning away...
But please try to remember something here:
These guys are only monsters.
And they're more afraid of you than you are of them.

125. You have no idea.
I'm on meds now that I've NEVER been on before. That primate is making me crazy. The thing that saddens me is that I have two co-workers who give me the same visceral gut-wrench whenever they walk into my office. They're both nice ladies, but they fill me with disgust because they believe all that "man of God" crap he peddles.

126. It's our amygdalas telling our bodies we're in danger
Hey,

I started a DU thread on this subject 3 years ago and the response was very similar to what we see today. My then-80-year-old mother told me that she could not stand the sight of his face or the sound of his voice, and always changed the channel when he appeared. Her best friend Kathleen reported the same reaction. That was the first time anyone raised the subject with me, and I felt validated. I was so horrified by the coup of 2000 that I stopped watching all TV for 6 months in order to avoid any exposure to his image or voice. Later I eased back in but always turn it off when he appears. Same with radio; the sound of the voice is somehow more horrifying than the sight of the smirk.

If you examine his approval ratings around the world, it is evident that this visceral horror reaction is extremely common, even normative. If Faux, CNN et al had not been constantly "spraying perfume over dog t--ds" (to use Samantha Bee's marvelous expression) the American public would smell the stink as well as the rest of the world does.

What is being set off by the face and voice is our amydalas (amydalae?) Here's a quote from a fine new book, Undoing Perpetual Stress by Richard O'Connor: "Especially pay attention to first impressions of people and situations. Negative impressions are, I think, often corret amygdala reactions that there is something to be afraid of here. When you have such a reaction, look into it-- mindfully, objectively, carefully." Earlier in the book he describes the role of the amygdala: "a center for emotional responses, especially the fear response...connects through the hypothalamus directly to the rest of the body to generate the fight or flight response without a detour through the thinking part of the brain..."

Trying to follow O'Connor's advice, and look into this phenomenon mindfully, objectively, and carefully, I note one common thread in the perceptions shared by DUers and others. That is, NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER GENERATED SUCH A RESPONSE. Absolutely true for me and for many who have posted in this thread. I didn't like Reagan or Bush I, but never felt the horror/terror that Dub evokes. Now, I wonder is whether there is something uniquely evil or dangerous about this *individual*? Somehow I think not. The uniqueness of our reaction (for those who have never felt this way about anyone else) is more about the uniqueness of the threat he poses to humanity.

While not quite ready to agree that the threat is from non-human sources, it's certainly *anti*-human. Devoid of empathy, avid for destruction, endlessly greedy for his superrich "base", appealing to the darkest and basest motives of Americans.

Maybe JPII's alleged fears about Dubya being the Antichrist had some basis. If so, the fact that his successor tipped the election in Dubya's favor suggests something terrifying about the role of the Church in the world today.
