Am I the only person to have a "physical reaction" to Bush?

Seriously. I hear "President Bush" and my ears and cheeks burn. When I see him via TV, my abdomen gets tight and my heart rate goes up. When I listen to him, my forehead tightens, my teeth grind and my temples hurt.

I have NEVER had such physical reactions to any human being in my entire life!!! To me, such an experience is totally new and strange.

Am I the only person who is having - has had this experience with any particular person?

When he comes on the radio in a news report or something, I switch it off as fast as I can. He is not welcome in my home (or my car).

If I hear his voice, I'm filled with such revulsion that if another vehicle with any sort of "W" or Neoclannish stickers on it drives by when I'm suffering from fits of Shrub-induced rage and nausea, they run the risk of being cursed out and flipped off at the very least. It's like a terrible fog in front of my eyes.

I've never felt such revulsion for a person before, even when I was on Shore Patrol and helped bring in a child molester. Perhaps because the damage he uncaringly causes to innocents is so much worse over a wider scale.

She had attempted suicide three times, and survived the last attempt—an overdose of pills—only because someone found her in time and rushed her to the hospital. Her children had left home and her husband was inattentive, and she was depressed. When she first went to the hospital, she simply sat and cried, but she seemed to respond well to therapy. After three weeks, she told her doctor that she was feeling much better and wanted a weekend pass to see her family. The doctor agreed, but just before Mary was to leave the hospital she confessed that the real reason she wanted to go on weekend leave was so that she could make another suicide attempt. Several years later, a group of young psychiatrists asked Ekman how they could tell when suicidal patients were lying. He didn't know, but, remembering Mary, he decided to try to find out. If the face really was a reliable guide to emotion, shouldn't he be able to look back on the film and tell that she was lying? Ekman and Friesen began to analyze the film for clues. They played it over and over for dozens of hours, examining in slow motion every gesture and expression. Finally, they saw it. As Mary's doctor asked her about her plans for the future, a look of utter despair flashed across her face so quickly that it was almost imperceptible.

Ekman calls that kind of fleeting look a "microexpression," and one cannot understand why John Yarbrough did what he did on that night in South Central without also understanding the particular role and significance of microexpressions. Many facial expressions can be made voluntarily. If I' m trying to look stern as I give you a tongue-lashing, I'll have no difficulty doing so, and you' ll have no difficulty interpreting my glare. But our faces are also governed by a separate, involuntary system. We know this because stroke victims who suffer damage to what is known as the pyramidal neural system will laugh at a joke, but they cannot smile if you ask them to. At the same time, patients with damage to another part of the brain have the opposite problem. They can smile on demand, but if you tell them a joke they can't laugh. I saw him back in the 2000 primaries. I normally run for the remote the second his chimpy face and grating voice come on. I only watch these news conferences waiting for the melt-down that is sure to occur. But it's absolute torture watching and listening to him. But communicating this disgust here helps to bear the torture.

I couldn't bear to hear Reagan either. Smarmy insincerity and blatant ignorance, the outright lies, said with a smile in patronizing, condescending tones, it's all just too repugnant to experience, even via tv or radio.

I went to a protest yesterday, in the largest city in the US, Los Angeles, downtown at 5PM. The busiest time of day, on a week day, in front of the Court House, to protest the looming overturning of the filibuster. There were, maybe, 75 people there. Out of a city of HOW many millions?

Where are the people? The people that care? The people that become violently nauseated at the sound of him?

I've pointed this out before, how Bush can't get his own dog Barney to come anywhere near him; for me, this PROVES the old adage that DOGS CAN SENSE EVIL.
Also, even though it's technically a real marvel, there's just something about that rubber "human" mask he wears that doesn't look quite real, or looks TOO real, I'm not sure which...
I don't have such visceral reactions myself; I used to, but it's amazing what you can acclimate yourself to when survival is at stake... and besides, SOMEBODY'S gotta keep an eye on the demon; considering what he's been willing to do right out in the open, with cameras rolling and all, who knows what he might try if we looked away for more than a couple seconds?
I am most offended by his obvious ignorance and indifference to others' opinions or needs, and that ugly fuckin' monkey-smirk of his; he seems to smirk most when he's sowing some new horrible mischief...
He is devouring the very future of humanity right before our eyes.

Hey,

I started a DU thread on this subject 3 years ago and the response was very similar to what we see today. My then-80-year-old mother told me that she could not stand the sight of his face or the sound of his voice, and always changed the channel when he appeared. Her best friend Kathleen reported the same reaction. That was the first time anyone raised the subject with me, and I felt validated. I was so horrified by the coup of 2000 that I stopped watching all TV for 6 months in order to avoid any exposure to his image or voice. Later I eased back in but always turn it off when he appears. Same with radio; the sound of the voice is somehow more horrifying than the sight of the smirk.

If you examine his approval ratings around the world, it is evident that this visceral horror reaction is extremely common, even normative. If Faux, CNN et al had not been constantly "spraying perfume over dog t--ds" (to use Samantha Bee's marvelous expression) the American public would smell the stink as well as the rest of the world does.

What is being set off by the face and voice is our amydalas (amydalae?) Here's a quote from a fine new book, Undoing Perpetual Stress by Richard O'Connor: "Especially pay attention to first impressions of people and situations. Negative impressions are, I think, often corret amygdala reactions that there is something to be afraid of here. When you have such a reaction, look into it-- mindfully, objectively, carefully." Earlier in the book he describes the role of the amygdala: "a center for emotional responses, especially the fear response...connects through the hypothalamus directly to the rest of the body to generate the fight or flight response without a detour through the thinking part of the brain..."

Trying to follow O'Connor's advice, and look into this phenomenon mindfully, objectively, and carefully, I note one common thread in the perceptions shared by DUers and others. That is, NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER GENERATED SUCH A RESPONSE. Absolutely true for me and for many who have posted in this thread. I didn't like Reagan or Bush I, but never felt the horror/terror that Dub evokes. Now, I wonder is whether there is something uniquely evil or dangerous about this *individual*? Somehow I think not. The uniqueness of our reaction (for those who have never felt this way about anyone else) is more about the uniqueness of the threat he poses to humanity.

While not quite ready to agree that the threat is from non-human sources, it's certainly *anti*-human. Devoid of empathy, avid for destruction, endlessly greedy for his superrich "base", appealing to the darkest and basest motives of Americans.

Maybe JPII's alleged fears about Dubya being the Antichrist had some basis. If so, the fact that his successor tipped the election in Dubya's favor suggests something terrifying about the role of the Church in the world today.
