His book, "Because of Romek", is compelling, chilling and downright heartbreaking and that is after reading only a few chapters. :( My stomach is still in knots from the story he told.
He was just a little boy when the Germans invaded Poland, killed his entire family and ended up in a concentration camp. He witnessed his brother's murder by the Germans. His brother, Romek, was in the underground and was responsible for stopping the water transport that was to be used to make Nuclear Weapons. David witnessed the murder of Romek. They were both tied to chairs and the Germans wanted a "blue file" that they thought Romek had. He didn't have it and knew nothing about it. The German soldier took a hot fire poker out of a nearby fireplace and thrust it into Romek's eye. The another soldier walked in with 2 clamps. He told Romek to tell them where that blue file was or they would tear his guts out. Romek didn't know where the blue file was. The soldier stretched Romek's mouth open so wide that his skin ripped back to his jaw. He took a clamp and shoved it in Romek's mouth and ripped his tongue out.
Then they turned to little 12 year old David. They beat him, almost to death, punctured his lungs with broken ribs and finally decided that he was too young to be involved. They ended up throwing him from a truck onto the street. He was taken into his home by 2 elderly ladies and it was just days later he witnessed the murder of his Father and only days after that he witnessed the murder of his mother and 5 of his 6 sisters.
Soon after that, he went to a concentration camp where he was ordered to open the can of gas crystals that they used in the showers to kill the millions of men, women and babies. Another one of his "jobs" was to take the gold out of the mouths of the murdered. He came upon a woman who had been gassed and she was holding her baby tight to her chest. David had to move the baby to get to her mouth and found the baby was suckling his mother breast. He was breastfeeding and hadn't inhaled the gas. He was still alive. David took the baby and was going to try to give him to some women in the camp when he was caught by a soldier. The soldier ordered David to throw the baby into an incinerator and he begged for the baby's life, but the soldier grabbed the baby from David and threw the baby into the incinerator. David was then beaten again.
He told so many of these stories...so damn sad. When he was finally released from the camp he weighed 72 pounds at 18 years old. You should see that pictured. My g-d, the atrocities. My heart broke for this kindly little old 78 year old man.
As he was talking about his religion and how the Jews were so hated because people thought/think they killed Jesus. He said the Jews didn't kill Jesus. Jesus was a Jew. It was at this point someone, a man in the crowd, yelled out "and he was born of the Virgin Mary!" What does he mean by that? and my son said a lady standing next to him snickered when David said Jesus was a Jew. Then he said Pope Pious had ordered Jesus to be killed because he didn't like his teachings. At that point another woman got up and walked out. I wondered why those people were there? Did they not know this man was Jewish and a Holocaust survivor?
He rolled up his sleeve and showed the crowd his tattooed number. He said the soldiers carved that number in his arm and the pain was so bad it felt like he had cut all the way to the bone. This man's story is horrific. If you haven't read his book, you should. The title, again, is "Because of Romek" by David Faber. You won't be able to put it down, I promise. :(
