I met David Faber, Holocaust survivor, today at a book signing.
His book, "Because of Romek", is compelling, chilling and downright heartbreaking and that is after reading only a few chapters. :( My stomach is still in knots from the story he told.

He was just a little boy when the Germans invaded Poland, killed his entire family and ended up in a concentration camp. He witnessed his brother's murder by the Germans. His brother, Romek, was in the underground and was responsible for stopping the water transport that was to be used to make Nuclear Weapons. David witnessed the murder of Romek. They were both tied to chairs and the Germans wanted a "blue file" that they thought Romek had. He didn't have it and knew nothing about it. The German soldier took a hot fire poker out of a nearby fireplace and thrust it into Romek's eye. The another soldier walked in with 2 clamps. He told Romek to tell them where that blue file was or they would tear his guts out. Romek didn't know where the blue file was. The soldier stretched Romek's mouth open so wide that his skin ripped back to his jaw. He took a clamp and shoved it in Romek's mouth and ripped his tongue out.

Then they turned to little 12 year old David. They beat him, almost to death, punctured his lungs with broken ribs and finally decided that he was too young to be involved. They ended up throwing him from a truck onto the street. He was taken into his home by 2 elderly ladies and it was just days later he witnessed the murder of his Father and only days after that he witnessed the murder of his mother and 5 of his 6 sisters.

Soon after that, he went to a concentration camp where he was ordered to open the can of gas crystals that they used in the showers to kill the millions of men, women and babies. Another one of his "jobs" was to take the gold out of the mouths of the murdered. He came upon a woman who had been gassed and she was holding her baby tight to her chest. David had to move the baby to get to her mouth and found the baby was suckling his mother breast. He was breastfeeding and hadn't inhaled the gas. He was still alive. David took the baby and was going to try to give him to some women in the camp when he was caught by a soldier. The soldier ordered David to throw the baby into an incinerator and he begged for the baby's life, but the soldier grabbed the baby from David and threw the baby into the incinerator. David was then beaten again.

He told so many of these stories...so damn sad. When he was finally released from the camp he weighed 72 pounds at 18 years old. You should see that pictured. My g-d, the atrocities. My heart broke for this kindly little old 78 year old man.

As he was talking about his religion and how the Jews were so hated because people thought/think they killed Jesus. He said the Jews didn't kill Jesus. Jesus was a Jew. It was at this point someone, a man in the crowd, yelled out "and he was born of the Virgin Mary!" What does he mean by that? and my son said a lady standing next to him snickered when David said Jesus was a Jew. Then he said Pope Pious had ordered Jesus to be killed because he didn't like his teachings. At that point another woman got up and walked out. I wondered why those people were there? Did they not know this man was Jewish and a Holocaust survivor?

He rolled up his sleeve and showed the crowd his tattooed number. He said the soldiers carved that number in his arm and the pain was so bad it felt like he had cut all the way to the bone. This man's story is horrific. If you haven't read his book, you should. The title, again, is "Because of Romek" by David Faber. You won't be able to put it down, I promise. :(

1. And we never learn..
Abu-Ghraib has stolen a playbook from the Nazis. Our new Attorney General Gonzales thinks this treatment is just fine and acceptable. It is so sad.

2. These stories truly make me pray there is an afterlife, a heaven...
God knows, these poor victims so deserve it. I look at young children and really wonder where this hatred comes from, but as you describe, antisemitism is alive and prospering among the truly ignorant.

3. Thanks for that...
...I appreciate you telling about your experience. It's a very hard story to hear, I'm sure. It must seem so much more real, now that you've met him.

I hear these stories about the concentration camps, and it makes me so sad for our entire species. How could we be capable of such horrors? It's just so unthinkable.

I'm glad David is doing well. If he's written a book and is speaking out with a strong voice--he has a fire burning inside of him that they could not extinguish. That's beautiful.

Again, thanks for sharing.

4. I cried and cried and cried
while listening to him. When he told of the day his mother and sister's were murdered he said he moved one of his dead sisters off of his mother, he cleaned the blood from her face and just laid on top of her. He was the same age my son is. <sigh> He said he prayed to g-d that he would survive this and promised his mother that day that if he did survive he would never let people forget, he would tell the world.

He was in a mental institution for 4 years (here in the states) because of his experience. While he was there he told his story on cassette tapes...that's his book. He travels the country speaking at colleges, high schools, middle schools and grade schools. He spoke at my son's school last week and that's when we bought his book. After reading what I have, I HAD to meet this man when I learned he would be at our Barnes and Noble today. I'm so glad I went. He truly touched my heart with his story.

5. Thank you for this post. There are many concentration...
camp survivors around here, where I live. But they are getting very old and the young people don't seem to know much about the Holocaust, many even doubt that it happened at all.

I'm terribly worried because we're still so rascist and "white supremacists" are on the rise here and in Germany, and anti-Semitism is growing again. People need to know these stories.

6. OMG - I'm still shaking from reading this
The story of the baby - so horrible. I'm so sick. I've been to Bergen Belsen - it's horrible seeing all the mass graves. Those so-called "Christians" who have so much hate they walk out of his lecture b/c he's jew - they should have to see these graves themselves.

8. Bergen Belsen is the concentration camp he was at.
He said, "if you don't believe my stories you should go there. All you have to do is move a little bit of earth and you will see the bones of the millions killed."
