"Years ago the Federal Communications Commission specified 7 words that were not acceptable to be said on the airwaves. They were an F word, an S word, a P word, two C words, an M word, and a T word. Now it seems that there is another C word that is considered unacceptable by some, not only on the airwaves but in general use. I'm referring to the word Christmas. A lot of people I know are afraid to say Merry Christmas anymore, lest they offend somebody. So they say, Happy Holiday, or Season's Greetings. They put up holiday trees instead of Christmas trees. Send out holiday cards instead of Christmas cards. There has been a reaction to this which I think may be an over reaction.
Personally I like the sound of Merry Christmas. It's more Christmassy than Happy Holiday. But some people are so offended by the notion that Merry Christmas might be offensive that they're taking action. In California a group called Committee to Save Merry Christmas is boycotting Macy's and its corporate parent Federated Department Stores, accusing them of replacing all their Merry Christmas signs. Macy's and Federated say that's not true, that store divisions can advertise as they wish and their clerks can say Merry Christmas to anybody they want. Some UPS drivers complained to a free speech group that they'd been told not to wish people a Merry Christmas. UPS denies that as "silly on its face." There have been some incidents though. The Wichita Eagle ran a correction for mistakenly referring to the Community Tree at the Winterfest celebration as a Christmas tree. The mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts apologized for a news release calling the city holiday party a Christmas party. I know people feel strongly on both sides of this, but to me, "I’m Dreaming of a White Holiday" just doesn't sound right."
