25. Galbraith's SS Piece in Salon: "Here Are the FACTS!"
Schieffer was wrong, Kerry was right

Contrary to the moderator's suggestion in the third debate, Social Security is not running out of money. And the Democratic candidate wasn't pandering when he said privatizing it would be disastrous.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By James K. Galbraith

Oct. 14, 2004 | CBS New anchor Bob Schieffer did a fine job of moderating the third presidential debate. Except for one thing. And that was when he began his question on Social Security by stating, "We all know Social Security is running out of money."

Social Security is not running out of money. Here are the facts.

1. Social Security is part of the government. It cannot run out of money unless the whole government also runs out of money. And the government of the United States cannot run out of money. That is not my opinion, it's an economic fact.

12. Summary of this letter and links to George Bush
Thanks plastic turkeys, for posting this. A lot of people such as salvorhardin, koko01, teach1st, amen, et al, have been assisting me in this effort, since I got the letter yesterday from my mom. So far I have emailed the letter and "card" to everyone on Skinner's list, and also spoke with Kerry HQ in Florida this morning about it.

The American Federation of Senior Citizens IS easy to locate with an advanced google search. It is run by Gary Jarmin, who also runs Christian Voice, JAR-MON Consultants, US Cuba Foundation, American Christian Cause, Pacific Asia Foundation, and National Parent's Day Council, all from the same address - 208 North Patrick Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314, 703-548-1708. Most or all of these organizations are listed as charitable organizations in various states.

Gary Jarmin was/is the partner of Tim Lahaye. They founded the American Coalition for Traditional Values, funded by the Moonies like everything else these guys seem to be doing. Tim Lahaye of course is no small fish - co-founder of the Moral Majority, and a key reason why Bush was selected president in 2000. Lahaye writes about the rapture, etc., and ways to move it along and make it happen. Jarmin and Lahaye hosted a big conference in the 80s about how the Christian Right could take over the country - Gingrich was one of the star attendees.

There is so much stuff on all this, it is overwhelming, but Bush is clearly deeply involved with these people.

Thanks everyone,

John

23. The fine print at the bottom of last page (shown just above the "card")
"The information enclosed describes one or more of American Federation of Senior Citizens (AFSC) activities. Your gift is very much appreciated. A copy of our latest financial report may be obtain by writing to American Federation of Senior Citizens, 208 N. Patrick Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314. Or by contacting us via e-mail at [email protected]. If you are a resident of the following states...."

It goes on to mention many states...the Vermont comment is most interesting:

"Vermont: You may obtain information from the State on the respective percentages of contributions that will be paid to AFSC and to Response Dynamics, Inc. by calling 1-800-649-2424."

Can't wait to call tomorrow. Also, I have a strong feeling that Gary Jarmin somehow got a list of seniors from AOL, and I wonder if it is against AOL rules to use an AOL email address for a (barf) charitable organization.

Response Dynamics, anyone?

26. My letter to John Kerry and the Kerry Florida HQ - will fax tomorrow
Dear Senator Kerry and Staff,

I am writing to you because my mom received a very scary letter about Social Security three days ago. I am faxing this letter, along with a copy of the envelope and the "Social Security Preservation Card" that she was asked to sign and mail in, along with a donation. Obviously, this type of scam is horrendous - however, there is much more to this then meets the eye.

Over the last 24 hours, many members of Democratic Underground and myself have been researching this letter, who is behind it, etc. The following are the main facts that we have uncovered so far:

1. The American Federation of Senior Citizens (AFSC) is at the same address as many other so-called charitable organizations, such as Christian Voice, JAR-MON Consultants, US Cuba Foundation, and the American Christian Cause. The address is 208 North Patrick Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314, and the phone number is 703-548-1708.

2. The AFSC is ran out of a house at this address by Gary Jarmin, a Moonie. Jarmin was partners with Tim Lahaye, another Moonie, co-founder of the Moral Majority, and author of several books about the end of the world, how to bring it about, etc.

3. As I said above, Jarmin and Lahaye are documented partners - I do not know what their relationship is now, but they founded the American Coalition for Traditional Values, which once hosted a huge conference that discussed how the religious right could take over America. All of this is well documented online and easy to find using Google advanced searches.

4. Tim Lahaye, as I am sure you know, is a major reason why George Bush was (s)elected president in 2000. It was Lahaye that visited Bush on behalf of the religious right, and approved him as a candidate they could back.

So what we have here is a letter full of lies, asking for money to save Social Security, money that is probably funneled to the Moonies and/or the Bush campaign, or perhaps to groups like the Swift Boat Liars.

This is not a hoax. I will Fed Ex you the original letter if you want it. I have no doubt that thousands of seniors received the same letter that my mom received, and I believe that she was identified by an AOL list of members that Gary Jarmin somehow got ahold of - in the fine print at the bottom it mentions the email address [email protected].

Anyways, this is not a hoax, and I am a rational man, but after the last 24 hours, I have had perhaps irrational thoughts - for example, did we go to war in Iraq to help the religious right advance "the Rapture?" Until yesterday, I thought it was all about oil, but now I am not so sure.

My name is John Dean, and I live in Orange County, CA. I am a common man - I was in the Air Force from 1976-1992, got out in 1992 because the forces were shrinking in size and many guys like myself were offered early outs with benefits, and these days I work at an electronics company. Recently I have become more and more active in grassroot attempts to stop George Bush, and I plan on traveling to Nevada on election morning and assisting the effort to get out the vote there, since California is Kerry country already. I believe that America has become a fascist nation while many people like myself slept, but I also believe it is not too late to take our country back. "Hope is on the way."

As I said before, I will Fed Ex the original letter to you if you want it. Thank you for reading and investigating all of this, and you are welcome to contact me anytime as follows:

Edited on Sun Oct-17-04 10:46 PM by Bozos for Bush
Salvorhardin, Koko01, teach1st, and amen went to the actual house today in Alexandria and took photos which will be posted in a few days even.

I've discovered a few more things...

Response Dynamics, which is mentioned in the fine print at the bottom of the last page of the Scary Social Security letter, is a fundraising outfit that has other right wing clients (besides AFSC) like Americans in Action, Children's Mercy Fund (in Alexandria even) and the CRNC - College Republican National Committee.

This seems endless, but it all ties to Lahaye, and therefore to Bush.

Ah. I'm glad you posted that.

Take a look here:
http://www.publicintegrity.org/527/search.aspx?act=com&orgid=7135&comid=101r

You'll notice that all those contributions came from Vienna, VA. This may be pure coincindence, but when I tried to track down Marvin Mondres, the signatory and so-called "Honorary Chairman" for the AFSC it was like trying to track down a ghost.

So I did a search on Marvin Mondres at superpages.com residential listings in or near Alexandria, Va. A Marvin Mondres did show up in Vienna, VA which is about 21 miles door-to-door from 208 North Patrick in Alexandria, VA.

Further googling on "Response Dynamics, Inc." brings us to http://www.hspdirect.com/paul.htm

This is another possible Moonie fundraising arm. Ron Robison's testimonial on that page lists him as president of the Young America's Foundation which accourding to http://watch.pair.com/database.html is a tax-free arm of the John Birch Society.

Amy Paul is shown on the HSP Direct site as coming from Response Dynamics, Inc.

In another thread, Sherwood, the producer of the anti-Kerry film that we are all concerned about, has been linked to the Moonies - which means he is tied together with Gary Jarmin, the sender of this letter, and therefore Tim Lahaye and Bushboy.

Have to go to work - we could use more help here to come up with more dirt on these links.

46. Here's what I found, but think others already might have posted on other
thread. What specifically were you looking for?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is Carlton Sherwood?

Via Josh Marshall, Sid's Fishbowl has more on Carlton Sherwood, the producer of the anti-Kerry film "Stolen Honor," which conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group will air on its TV stations days before the election.

Turns out "Sherwood formerly worked for Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge, whom George W. Bush later appointed as the first Secretary of Homeland Security. The Bush administration has selected Sherwood to create and manage a new federal website aimed at first responders (police officers, firefighters, etc.). While working as a Ridge administration official, Sherwood directed then-Gov. Ridge's award-winning broadcast TV and radio operations in Harrisburg."

Sid's Fishbowl says: "Karl Rove, take a bow. This is classic. The former minister of propaganda for the Homeland Security Secretary just happens to produce a right-wing hit piece that will run on TV in just about every swing state, days before the election."

And John Gorenfeld has more on Sherwood's "unusual career."

The social security scare meme is one that the Republicans have been trotting out for quite some time now, so it's not so surprsing that their cronies make some cash while peddling it.

45. From the "Fear Merchants" article..here are some "fronts" that need
more research. I have a feeling that the AARP might be involved with the "Fear Merchants," too. Remember there was a huge outcry against them for passing the "Prescription Drug/Medicare Bill." Notice that in that article Greg Marchildon of AARP is mentioned. Maybe a Google of his ties to Jarmin, Lehaye and the other casts of characters should be explored. Also these other groups I pulled out of the article. I Googled the "National Center for Public Policy Research" and posted below on this thread. I don't have any more time today to check out the rest because what I found on NCPP was so overwhelming.

BTW! The link with Bob Dole and "Americans for Balanced Budget" should be interesting. Remember he was just listed in the "Riggs Bank" investigation where he had his "Assistant" withdrawing $8,000.00 a week out of an account which he said he needed for "pocket money" because he doesn't use a credit card. That's alot of money a month for a retired Senator and given that Riggs has been linked to Terrorist Activities...it does lead one to wonder. :eyes:

I'm supposed to be working for Kerry today....sheesh...gotta run. But, if anyone can follow up on these it might be very revealing:

National Retirement Security Task Force based in Washington, D.C.

National Center for Public Policy Research,

Greg Marchildon, spokesman for the American Association of Retired Persons

Amy Moritz Ridenour, president of the National Center for Public Policy Research

Moritz Ridenour

American Federation of Senior Citizens.

U.S. Sen. Bob Dole on behalf of a group called "Americans for a Balanced Budget in Washington."

All taken from the article: "THE FEAR MERCHANTS."

42. Here's what a search of "Gary Jarmin, George Bush" revealed:
Google Search of "Gary Jarmin, George Bush" yielded all this...and looking at the Google Links I don't have time to search reveals links to the various "front organizations" Jarmin is affiliated with. There's so much and so many links that it goes on forever. Here's a sampling. Maybe some of you already have found this, but I didn't have time to check through the most recent research on all the "Social Security Scam" threads. The connections through every corner of our government, think tanks, policy institutes, are vast and frightening. The first link has tons of information with tentacled links.

High members of our Government have to know that Jarmin is doing a "scam" of senior citizens and probably much else. And, if they know, why don't they stop him? Are these groups and think tanks getting money from Jarmin, Moon and the rest? I think we know the answer..

48. I truly think this RW network can be shut down as a criminal enterprise
under RICO and other laws. Perhaps not as long as they hold power, but after they're evicted from the White House.

50. Yes. moonwatcher@bartcop has been pushing the RICO angle for a few years
now.

There is also another issue.... Moon's organization is a foreign influence lobbying tool....and should be scrutinized as such.

44. So now SS is jeapardized by years of liberal abuse and over-spending!
What extreme lengths these crooks will go to to bankrupt the country, and then blame the ensuing financial crisis on the 'liberals', and claim that the system now requires radical changes in Social Security. This is disgraceful.

It seems endless - have I been asleep all these years?

49. Can't find Marvin Mondres either, but an "Eric Mondres" looks interesting.
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 03:37 PM by KoKo01
Perhaps Eric is a brother, a relative, or no relation but it's interesting he's a big lobbyist and "The Hill" newsletter has an article about him today. (I tried all kinds of search combinations with Marvin and can't find any connection) Maybe someone else has an idea? This guy is probably a dead end...but good to keep an eye on.
Note he served in the Reagan Administration..get's the job in Atlanta and is now back lobbying when we know we are going to have some economic problems on the horizon. Hey...maybe he's a good guy? :eyes:

THE LOBBY LEAGUE
#18 Government-sponsored enterprises

Each week, The Hill highlights the top lobbyists on a sector-specific basis through conversations with the major players on K Street, congressional staffers and other Washington insiders.

Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta: Eric Mondres
The Federal Home Loan Banks (FHLB) could be included in any legislation coming out of Congress, and Eric Mondres of the Atlanta bank was named by just about every lobbyist and staffer as the most involved of any FHLB lobbyist. Mondres spent almost a decade as a lobbyist with ACB before joining FHLB Atlanta last year.

Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta Names New Vice President of Government Relations

CONTACT: Christopher McEntee, 404.888.8158

ATLANTA, April 9, 2003 -- The Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBA) today announced Eric Mondres has joined the Bank as Vice President, Director of Government Relations. Mondres will be responsible for developing and executing government affairs strategy, while providing member education on legislative issues that affect the Bank and its membership.

"Eric's experience in developing strategic relationships with members of Congress, state trade organizations, and other constituencies will make him an excellent addition to the Bank's management team," said Ray Christman, FHLBA President and Chief Executive Officer. "The Bank, along with our member financial institutions, will benefit greatly from his knowledge and expertise."

Since 1994, Mondres has served as director and government affairs counsel for America's Community Bankers in Washington, D.C. His prior work experiences include: serving as director of congressional affairs for the Thrift Depositor Protection Oversight Board; executive vice president of U.S. Consultants, Inc., and vice president of government affairs for the Society of American Florists. He also served in President Reagan's administration as the deputy director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Congressional Relations Office.

About the FHLBA
The Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta is one of the 12 district banks in the Federal Home Loan Bank System. Established in 1932, the $100 billion financial services organization provides low-cost financing, community development funding, and other banking services to more than 1,170 financial institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

53. It's easy to get on their lists. She might give to charities or signed up
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 09:14 PM by KoKo01
to Reader's Digest books or sweepsteaks. I'm a "privacy freak" and yet we get junk mail that fills a trash can once a day..all from people we have no interest in. But, we aren't elderly with time on our hands to wonder about this. Also folks in their 70, 80's and 90's are more trusting that most folks here.

Heck, think about half of America that loves Bush, FGS! Then think about how folks could get suckered by this stuff. If I didn't throw most of the stuff out..I might get suckered too..and they make it so urgent you don't know if it's your "bank statement" or "Phone Bill" these days. That's how they sucker them.

Had this problem with my Dad in his 80's with Readers Digest and charities that weren't legit. He wouldn't believe us that it was all just designed to take his money. And, he was the tightest person I've ever know with his money..wouldn't give it to his children...but was a sucker for every product to cure something and every piece of mail asking for money from him to "fight the government that they said was trying to take his money from him."

Not all are like that, fortunately, and I have other elderly relativies who are sharp and don't fall for that stuff...but it was a BIG problem with my Dad. And he was always trusting of the wrong people...but still that these sharks prey on the elderly is disgusting. We will all be old some day and maybe alone and needing something to do..and might end up getting suckered by something like this or worse. These Mail Scams need to be stopped just like the Calling Scams. :-(

63. This is MORE
upside down trickery!! of course.. because we all know whoosh* intends to rape social security. ARGGGHHH ..

The latest volley came over the weekend when Republican campaign officials accused the Times Sunday magazine of fabricating a provocative quote from Bush in which he bragged -- behind closed doors and speaking to wealthy supporters -- that he would announce plans for "privatizing of Social Security" early next year, after his reelection.
