Report: One-fourth of overseas votes go uncounted

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Findings being released at a Senate hearing today show one out of every four military and overseas ballots for the 2008 election may have gone uncounted.

Sen. Charles Schumer, chairman of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, says the study "is enough to show that the balloting process for service members is clearly in need of an overhaul."

Schumer's office says voter negligence is not thought to be a major factor since a person living abroad must request the absentee ballot and show a clear intention to vote.

The committee surveyed election offices in seven states with high numbers of military personnel: California, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and West Virginia. More than 441,000 absentee ballots were requested by eligible voters from those states living abroad. About one-in-four were disenfranchised.

1. Not that my Texas absentee vote would have made a whit of difference
Even so, I would be pissed to learn that it had not been counted.
