French arrest 10 in connection with terror probe

By JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer 25 minutes ago

Authorities in France, Germany and the Netherlands on Friday detained at least 10 people suspected of helping to fund al-Qaida-linked militants with roots in Uzbekistan, officials said.

One suspect was detained in Germany, another in the Netherlands, with the rest detained in France, said a senior French police official who was only authorized to discuss the arrests on condition of anonymity.

The suspects' nationalities were not given but officials said they were Turkic-speaking.

French police suspect they collected funds for the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a militant group said by the United States to have close ties to al-Qaida.

1. why do europeans seem to be to consistently arrest people
before things reach tragic consequences?

not that it's fool proff -- but they certainly seem to be on the job.

as opposed to say our own authorities charged with protecting us and 9-11.

2. Well ...
there were the two attacks in London, the one in Madrid, and the botched one in Germany. "Not fool proof" seems to be the least we can say.

I also seem to remember hearing a lot of nay-saying about many of the other arrests, extreme skepticism that any of the arrested were actually guilty. In many cases, a lot of those arrested weren't indicted; usually some were. And some have been convicted, with others pending trial. Just as with most other arrests, police are not perfect when it comes to stopping attacks, nor are they perfect in arresting all and only those that should and can be convicted.
