House votes to study school voucher bill (New Hampshire)
House votes to study school voucher bill
By Norma Love, Associated Press Writer, 1/16/2004

CONCORD, N.H. -- The House has voted to study a school voucher program instead of implementing it now.

The Education Committee had recommended studying the issue after its members could not reach consensus. After a brief debate, the House agreed, 233-118, to authorize more study.

Rep. Kenneth Weyler, R-Kingston, the bill's prime sponsor, appealed in vain to the House to approve a voucher plan immediately. Weyler and other supporters said studying the idea would mean delaying implementation for a year or longer.

They proposed creating a voucher program using public funding to pay for a child to attend private school.

"Look at how cheaply we can make long distance phone calls. Why are we so fearful of competition?" he said.

1. Well.... There is something inherently different in phone service
and the education of a kid..

A kid only gets ONE chance to be educated.. If you get a "bad deal" with phone service, you have only "endured" bad phone service for calls you have already made..

All this "study" stuff bugs me too.. The schools need the money that these studies eat up...and at the end of the study, we all know what the result will be .. It all depends on who conducts the study. They set up their desired end reslut and then set out to make the study fit their agenda..

In the meantime, kids who are at school NOW are being short changed..

We give lipservice to education, but what we really want is cheap daycare for adolescents, and if they end up learning something, great..
