Exam formally rejects claim of key suspect that she committed suicide

updated 59 minutes ago
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - A 20-year-old pregnant Marine who disappeared in December died from a head injury, authorities said Tuesday, formally rejecting the claims of the key suspect in her death that she committed suicide.

Dr. Charles Garrett, the Onslow County medical examiner, said Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach died from “traumatic head injury due to blunt force trauma.”

Authorities recovered her burned remains, along with those of her unborn child, over the weekend from a fire pit in the backyard of Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, a fellow personnel clerk at Camp Lejeune whom she had accused of rape.

2. I'm getting very annoyed that the media keeps referring to her as the "pregnant marine".
She does have a name.

3. Why is this story national news?
CNN cuts into its world news hour to give us live press conferences from the North Carolina sheriff. Why?

Why do our cable news networks act like cheesy local news channels?

4. I think it's because the suspect is still missing
They are putting his face up on billboards and maybe someone watching TV will recognize.

6. A marine accused another marine of raping her and now he's a suspect in her murder.
Sounds like national news to me. What the hell is going on down in Fort Bragg? She was eight months pregnant, and claimed that his rape of her caused the pregnancy. Now she's been found murdered and burned in a pit in his backyard. Why wasn't he arrested months ago?

Marines aren't supposed to rape and murder one another. It's a very bad sign about the state of our military. I'd say it's something the nation should be paying attention to right now.

7. The Marine Corps does not want and never did want women in their ranks.
BUT they have to abide by anti-discrimination laws which tells me that any woman who becomes a Marine does so at her own risk. Was it always this way in the Corps - even in WW2?

12. She obviously....
committed suicide.(per the jerk's initial statement):eyes:

Being a woman in the military has always been a dicey proposition. The best advice I got before I went through boot camp came from a friend of mine that had been assaulted-and little was done. She didn't discourage me, but she advised me to keep my eyes wide open. Sad but true. It never happened to me but I had female military friends that it happened to. We always traveled in pairs at the very least....everywhere.
