No power for about 600,000 in N. Calif
Source: Reuters

A fast-moving storm packing high winds on Friday morning left about 600,000 northern and central Californians without electricity, utility companies said.

About 454,000 Pacific Gas & Electric Co. customers were without power as of 9 a.m. PST (noon EST/1700 GMT) Friday as high winds damaged power equipment. More than 130,000 customers of Sacramento Metropolitan Utility District also were without power, said Dace Udris of SMUD.

About half of the PG&E outages occurred in the San Francisco area, with most of the remaining outages north of San Francisco.

PG&E has restored power to about a quarter of those affected. Including those that had been restored since the first outages were reported at 3 a.m., about 603,000 PG&E customers lost power at some point, PG&E said.

The cause of the outages are mainly downed power lines

12. This wasn't a typical winter storm.
The same storm hit Southern Oregon. It was big. We're not talking a typical winter storm here, we're talking winds gusting to around 50 mph, flooding, etc. I'm looking out my window at a tree that had a couple of its bigger branches literally torn off by the wind. Storms like this don't happen very frequently.

13. Every year I've been here we've had an "atypical" storm.
You'd think we'd learn to expect them by now.

16. So...does that mean its normal?
...just thinking. The media does exagerate everything these days. Keeping the 'terrors' and your reptilian brain functions at a constant.

Atypical since...? 1970's...1950's...1930's? Watchout for the media omitting statistics from decades or centential data.

Being in Boston...we get Nor-easters every year. Yet nobody claims we've had any change of weather. This year, we've had a typical winter. VERY COLD right now.

But hey...the families of the Anglo-American NWO live around here.

3. Here on the water, the winds are the strongest yet.
I had stuff blowing around last night that 90mph gust have never moved.

It is effing howling out there right now.

I'm going down to the waterfront to really get into it.

5. I've lost five sections of fence so far
My wife called me with the good news. I'm sitting in my 13th floor corner office at 3rd and Capitol in Sacto and the wind and rain are kicking the crap out of my windows. So far, I've heard of two state buildings that have lost power (Justice and General Services) and the Cal-EPA building looks pretty dark as well. Gee, I can't wait to make the trip home. Surface streets only.

6. My power went out about 3:30 a.m. and just now came back on.
This whole building has only electric power, so no coffee for us this morning. Trees, lines, fences down. We pissed off Mother Nature good this time.

11. Off and on all morning here.
We were in the dark for two hours here at work, and had to go clear downtown to find someplace with the lights on so we could get hot food and warm air while we waited it out.

15. Our power
is still on and the wind has quieted down for the time being. It was really slamming things around here this morning.
I'm surprised it didn't knock down our power lines.

I did hear that our rapid transit system was down. That will really tie up the commute. UGh.

I'm glad I don't have to be anywhere.

Hope everyone stays safe.

Well, more than usual.

SF needs residential/commercial trash cans that have lids with a latch.

21. I saw on CNN's website that there were semi-trailer trucks
blown over on the Golden Gate Bridge, I think? They had a picture--unbelievable.

I don't envy them losing their power--I lost my power for 4 days in the ice storm we had a few weeks ago, and it was miserable. I'm still so grateful for lights and heat, I can't tell you.

I hope everyone stays safe.

22. Roads a mess in Mendocino County. Power back on, on coast. And I just saw
Storm #3 sneak ashore, like the Angel of Death--a very black (lightless) cloud just came off the ocean to cover Orion's Belt in what had been a pristine night sky with Milky Way ablaze. Circa 3:30 am, Mendocino coast--not a cloud in the sky for a period of time. Two brief flashes of lightning accompanied this Cloud; no crack, no thunder. Very quiet. The brief lightning flashes did not lighten the Cloud. Strange. Maybe I'm having hallucinations. I caught the "superbug" this trip (frackin nasty cold), and I'm on lots of medicines. I was also caught in the tail of Storm #2 in South San Francisco yesterday. A flood on 280 went over the top of the car, utterly blinding us for about 30 seconds. Marin was bumper to bumper for an hour, because they CLOSED the Richmond Bridge (I have no idea why). There was 20 miles of almost unpassable tree debris on the road we finally took home. 128 closed along the Navarro (trees down). (75 mph winds at Navarro/coast.) 1 closed at Pt. Arena (Garcia River flooded). We took a gamble and managed to get home between storms. Car radio out, so we had no idea what-all was happening in Mendocino County or the rest of the state. Just finding out. And, anyway, Mendocino County rarely gets reported on, like Dennis Kucinich (and now, John Edwards--jaded though I am, and savvy to war profiteering corporate news monopoly games, I 'couldn't believe' the treatment of Edwards re Iowa, in the craprags I picked up along the way). Gonna go check on some 'news.'
