Spending Outpaces Donations for Romney and Giuliani

Two of the leading Republican presidential candidates spent more
than they raised this summer, according to campaign finance
reports filed yesterday, in another sign of the fund-raising difficulties
the party faces as it seeks to hold on to the White House.

Mitt Romney, the former Mass governor, raised $9.5 million in
contributions over the summer but spent more than twice that,
$21.3 million.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, raised more
than any other Republican this summer -$11.6 million- but he also
spent more than he raised, burning through $13.3 million without
running a single television commercial. His campaign reported
$11.6 million in the bank that could be used for the primaries.

Those of you indulging yourselves in the internecine warfare here at DU
might want to come up for air for a few moments. Your party seems to
be doing quite well without you.

2. No problem for Mittens
He'll just write another check from his oversized bank account bulging with blood money to his own campaign. But Ghouliani spent $13.3 million without running a single television commercial? Is he making his alimony payments out of his campaign fund? Buying off Bernie Kerik? Investing in plus-size cocktail dresses for his inevitable post-campaign career as a torch singer in campy gay cabarets?

6. I don't think the contest between our candidates
is quite the same. All of our top candidates are considered "liberal" by the various ratings groups.

Both Rudy and Mitt were top guys in liberal areas. They are each trying to accuse the other of not being conservative enough because the primary voters are extraordinarily anti-liberal. McCain's stance on immigration does not fit in with the Republican base's ideas.
