Craig vows to stay in Senate

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Idaho Sen. Larry Craig defiantly vowed to serve out his term in office on Thursday despite losing a court attempt to rescind his guilty plea in a men's room sex sting.

"I have seen that it is possible for me to work here effectively," Craig said in a written statement certain to disappoint fellow Republicans who have long urged him to step down.

Craig had earlier announced he would resign his seat by Sept. 30, but had wavered when he went to court in hopes of withdrawing his plea.

The third-term lawmaker issued his statement not long after Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter relayed word he has selected a replacement for Craig in the event of a resignation.

while the last 2 qualities make him the perfect gop senator the first should disqualify him.

there is nothing wrong with sex, or even gay sex, but cruising for it in a public bathroom isnt right for anyone, not even a senator.

Oh, I'm SUUUUUURRRREEE they're going to get right on that.

Let me save everyone the effort of wondering what will happen as a result of their "investigation."

NOTHING.......NADA........ZIP.......

He'll get a warning, "Don't ever let that happen again, or we'll have to say......Don't ever let that happen again."

I imagine they'll look into it right after they take careof those Contempt charges which they were going to issue against Miers, etc.

51. "I will continue my effort to clear my name in the Senate Ethics Committee —

In his statement, Craig said he will not run for a new term next year.

But in the meantime, he said: "I will continue my effort to clear my name in the Senate Ethics Committee — something that is not possible if I am not serving in the Senate."

The ethics committee has already signaled it is reviewing the facts of Craig's case, taking the step after the Senate Republican leadership requested it.

Craig's decision to stay and fight raises the strong possibility of public hearings — virtually certain to be televised live — centered on the issue of gay sex.

Instead of resigning, Craig's decided to stall, contrary to his previous stance.

His detractors in the party need to give it a rest...room for all under the GOP big tent.

They couldn't flush him out, even though a replacement had been tapped.
