NGOs unveil scathing report on impact of US-led war in Iraq
by Gerard Aziakou

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - A coalition of non-governmental groups on Wednesday took the UN Security Council to task for its "shocking silence" on alleged violations of international law by US-led forces in Iraq and urged an early end to their mandate.

In a scathing report, the Global Policy Forum slammed the conduct of US-led coalition forces and their Iraqi government partners who "have held a large number of Iraqi citizens in 'security detention' without charge or trial, in direct violation of international law."

"No Iraqi is safe from arbitrary arrest and the number of prisoners has risen greatly since 2003 (when the US-led war began)," said the forum, an international non-profit body that monitors policy-making at the United Nations.

"The Security Council has maintained a shocking silence on (abuses in) Iraq," James Paul, one of the lead authors of the report, told a press briefing.

...

(The report) also accused US forces of abusing and torturing "large numbers" of Iraqi prisoners and notes that "torture increasingly takes place in Iraqi prisons, apparently with US awareness and complicity."

3. Massive Corruption

"Under the control or influence of US authorities, public funds in Iraq have been drained by massive corruption and stolen oil, leaving the country unable to provide basic services and incapable of rebuilding. Billion of dollars have disappeared," it said.

Plus the billions from the US treasury poured in. Some are getting very rich from this war.

5. Another criminal act that probably doesn't have an International
Law actually prohibiting the Invasion of a country, taking control of the government and then not providing basic necessities of life to the citizens. We need to make it a welfare state for all the widows and children left without fathers and husbands, the lack of jobs and any security. I'm not kidding about the food boxes and water deliveries house to make sure all those curfews aren't prohibiting people from leaving to get supplies. The electric is unstable so refrigeration is interrupted constantly. That means they can't keep food frozen. Spoilage of food and impure water are killing those unlucky enough to miss the bombs and bullets. I'd kill myself if I lived there. My heart would break with despair over my country. I couldn't stand the anticipation of waiting to be killed by a bomb or going to jail and being killed. Generations are going to be fucked up from childhood trauma. Who could you trust?

6. What most corrupt governments do to their own citizens the bush**
admin does to the world. They snatch people off the streets everywhere. They mutilate and murder at will (with more plans for more killing in the works). They feel no qualms at invading and occupying a sovereign nation and then calling their people who are defending their own country 'insurgents'.

What do you expect from a bunch of thugs who pulled off a coup and just marched right into power in this country?

11. Beyond sad...
Years from now those with the power today to stop Bush (or at least try) will explain how sorry they are that they didn't

But it'll have to wait years...for most of guilty to die or become old and infirmed...when it is far too late to hold them truly accountable

then those august bodies of government (of all description) will offer up their most humble apologies..

I'd just like to say in advance of that future..FUCK YOU ALL.

15. God Bless America

And all that we have come to stand for in the world.

What ever happened to "A whole generation, with a new explanation?"

Why have we sunk into the blind ignorance, intolerant savagery, and dark torments of the faith-based past?

I was in San Francisco in 1969 – after having been in Viet Nam in 1968 – and I did think that the world had changed.

Lordy, Lordy no, though: Reason, compassion, truth, fairness and light now exist in the world of dreams, not in The New America.

Bit of a loss, actually.
