WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House scrambled Sunday to move up Attorney Alberto Gonzales' planned testimony to Congress on April 17 about his involvement in firing eight federal prosecutors, only to get a cold shoulder from majority Democrats.

The effort reflected the frustration by Republican senators and the White House itself over how long it is taking the embattled attorney general to explain himself under oath. Congress has just begun a vacation - one week for the Senate, two for the House.

In a sign of Gonzales' diminished standing on Capitol Hill, the Senate GOP leader offered lukewarm support for the nation's top law enforcer, whose inconsistent explanations about the dismissals have become a distraction for the Bush administration.

Asked directly if he has confidence in Gonzales, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said: "I can honestly say the president does."

11. This is bullshit.
They know Congress is in recess, and they are trying to spin it that Gonzo wants to exonerate himself.

12. They know that more time spent in the districts will erode support for Gonzo
in Congress - that is why they would like to move it up. Very undemocratic of the WH. Why don't they want to give congress people a chance to discuss this with their constituents? Some whippersnapper reporter should ask the WH that.

13. The WH wants to mess up Congress' vacations is all
plain and simple.
What's the hurry? Yawn.....
Let him be known as the lying piece of %*^% he is for as long as possible whilst the Congress reads . digests, and sets up questioning of the thousands of emails they have that were sent out on RNC servers to sidestep being placed in the pResidential record.
