THE WOMAN credited with returning credibility to the Dutchess County Republican Party is resigning after seven years at the helm of the county GOP amid apparent dissatisfaction with her leadership.
Betsy Brilliant announced on Wednesday that will step down from the position today, more than a year before her two-year term expires. She also will resign as secretary of the New York State Republican Party.

Brilliant was elected vice chairman of the party in 1997 in a bitterly fought race highlighted by William Paroli Sr. wresting the chairmanship from Nan Cross.
Brilliant was elected to lead the party in 1999 - after Paroli resigned in the wake of his arrest on federal conspiracy and extortion charges - and promised to return integrity and civility to the divided party.
