Hugo Chavez looking forward to "beautiful" debate with Bush

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he expects a spirited debate this week as he, U.S. President George W. Bush and other leaders meet in Argentina for the Summit of the Americas.

The U.S. government's efforts to revive its proposal for a hemisphere-wide "free trade" zone are doomed to failure, Chavez said Sunday during his weekly television and radio program "Hello President."

Chavez has said he looks forward to sitting at the same table with his archrival Bush during the summit at the seaside resort of Mar del Plata.

13. He should be worried about security
sounds like some will be whipped to a frenzy...

As Bush attends the summit Friday and Saturday, a separate "People's Summit" is planned at a nearby stadium, bringing together leftist activists, students, indigenous leaders and union leaders.

"In the streets, there is a Latin American fervor. We'll see each other there to defend our model," Chavez said.

4. He thinks Bush will actually listen to anyone else?
get a clue, Hugo. Bush will speak, then he will retreat to his private hotel suite to be backslapped and ADMIRED by his inner corps of sycophants & cronies.

Hugo can say whatever he wants. Bush will not even be in the room to listen.

10. It AIN'T gonna happen.
Bush will never put himself into a position where he actually has to answer to anybody, let alone the "Rogue" Firebrand Hugo Chavez, who he has tried to assassinate.

Chavez is just kidding around. He knows it will never happen. But he loves to tease and mock Bush. I remember last year, Chavez said Bush looked like a "Clown with lipstick". Unbelievable words, but I enjoyed them.

26. I found an article about the show from the Boston Globe
Channeling his energies
Venezuelans riveted by president's TV show
By Indira A. R. Lakshmanan, Globe Staff | July 27, 2005

MATURIN, Venezuela -- Love him or hate him, Venezuelans are obsessed with their president. And never more so than on Sundays, when the voluble leftist-populist holds forth in a live, unscripted television marathon that's part folk sermon, part revolutionary diatribe, part homespun entertainment -- and wholly Hugo Chavez.

(Hello, President) -- a rambling and unpredictable monologue/call-in show -- is watched as intently by some of Chavez's frustrated opponents as by his dedicated loyalists.

''Millions are watching to know how to follow him, and millions of others are watching to try to destroy him," said Zenndy Berrios, the show's executive producer.

A mass-market soapbox for the policies and musings of the wildly popular, controversial, and potentially the most influential leader in Latin America today, ''Alo, Presidente"-- like Chavez himself -- still mesmerizes, delights, and infuriates a polarized public after more than six years on the air. In many ways, the program mirrors Chavez's leadership style: whimsical, polemical, and highly personalized. And its message is deeply threatening to the Bush administration's vision of politics in its backyard.
(snip)

From page #3:

''I've seen people fainting when they see him or touch him, he's like a rock star," gushed Berrios. ''I don't know anywhere else in the world where a president would spend at least five hours every Sunday listening to his people . . . It is a giant ear to the people."
(snip/...)

Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 03:46 AM by Solon
at least Chavez makes sense, and is very intelligent. Can you imagine Bush, or any head of state saying this after being VIOLENTLY deposed by the Military and Oligarchy: "If you oppose me, oppose me, but don't oppose the Constitution." That is precisely what Chavez said, that tells me two things about the man, one, he actually values democratic government, and two, that he is probably, if not the most intelligent, the shrewdest politician on the planet.
