U.S. VP Cheney to tour Alberta oilsands
CALGARY (CP) — American Vice-President Dick Cheney is to jet into Alberta next month to tour the province's energy-rich oilsands, said Premier Ralph Klein.

Speaking at the premiers meeting in Banff Friday, Klein said U.S. President George W. Bush's right-hand man would arrive in September for a primer on the multibillion-dollar oilsands projects in northeastern Alberta.

"There's just a tremendous amount of interest now in seeking that secure and reliable supply of oil and gas — and of course they're looking to Canada and in particular Alberta," Klein said.

4. Gonna Be Sept. In Canada By Then, Dick
Air temps could be down to 50 deg. Better bring the down coat, insulated overalls, long underwear, and hand warmer.

Also, a Cat diesel hat would be a nice finishing touch.

Dick's wardrobe on a 95 deg. Texas day.

35. That's what's odd. Meyers and Bush in their shirtsleeves..
Remember when Shrub was first selected, he talked about there being a dress code for WH staff? I thought maybe he told them to dress up.

'Course that doesn't account for Cheney...but anybody who'd wear a ratty parka to a Holocaust memorial service is profoundly limited in the "taste" department anyway.

"Territorial control over Canada is part of Washington's geopolitical and military agenda as formulated in April 2002 by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "Binational integration" of military command structures is also contemplated alongside a major revamping in the areas of immigration, law enforcement and intelligence.

At this critical juncture in our history and in anticipation of the visit of George W. Bush to Canada on November 30th, an understanding of these issues is central to the articulation of a coherent anti-war and civil rights movement.

The purpose of this detailed report is to encourage discussion and debate in Canada and Quebec, as well as in the US. Kindly circulate this article widely. The Summary can be forwarded by email with a hyperlink to the complete text."

57. The capital city, Edmonton, is actually quite Liberal
We regularly send a lot of Liberals (or NDP, the nominally socialist party) to the provincial legislature and/or the federal Parliament. Calgary is starting to come around a bit, although it has a long way to go. The rural areas are pretty hopeless, and due to gerrymandering they have political power all out of proportion to their numbers. Things are a bit more complex than most people think.

22. Only one thing to say, "PEAK OIL"..
Do you get it yet?? What are you waiting for??

http://theoildrum.blogspot.com/2005/08/peak-oil-beyond-fear.html

Peak Oil--Beyond Fear

Change can induce fear. Change, even of civilizations, is inevitable, but fear is not. When fear emerges, it can either linger or evolve into other more positive feelings, such as acceptance. Fear-based actions are seldom effective. Denial is often followed by anger and/or fear. This is understandable. Peak Oil is an unprecedented event in human history. But getting stuck in fear or anger and merely blaming or working individually only to protect what one has accumulated--rather than working through one’s feelings and with others--can be dangerous.

49. it looks like our choice of capital cities was a good idea after all
Way back, Toronto and Montreal both got bummed out after the feds decided to site our national capital at an obscure logging town in the middle of nowhere (Ottawa). And for the rest of the 19th century, the trend continued of picking places which weren't the biggest or most wealthy towns, but harder to find and easier to defend (such as Victoria, on Vancouver Island -- or Edmonton, which is quite far north of the border).

Even assuming that Georgie can find these places on the map, it'll take a while for him to get the troops up here (especially after we switch the road signs around on him).

34. This is an old article but well worth reading.
http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/44/100.html

It's No Wonder Bill Clinton Opened US Oil Reserves. NAFTA Guarantees That He Can Top Up His Country's Tank With Canada's Fuel.

Considering the uproar over the price of oil, it's absolutely remarkable that few recall the debate that raged over our energy sovereignty a decade ago. That was just before Canada ceded total control of its oil and gas reserves in both the Canada-U.S free-trade agreement, signed in 1989 by Brian Mulroney, and its successor, the North American free-trade agreement, signed in 1994 by Jean Chrétien. Those deals left Canadians at the mercy of global prices and without the power to conserve these precious resources.

On the other hand, if they're just now getting whiff of it we are in a world of sh!t.

And another thing: those tar sands are going to be e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e to process. And, being corporate bloodsuckers, they aren't going to do it until gas prices make it economical to do so, i.e. profitable. Say goodbye to your nest egg. Hell, say goodbye to the whole nest.
