McCain says he 'absolutely' wants to lead country
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0507mccain-mensjournal07.html

Billy House
Republic Washington Bureau
May. 7, 2005 12:00 AM

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain says that he "absolutely" wants to be president and that he is qualified for the job but that he is focused on his Senate duties and will "wait a couple of years" to decide about a White House bid in 2008.

"I have the luxury of being able to wait because I don't have to lay any of the groundwork. I don't have to go meet all of the state party chairmen - I've done that before," McCain says in the June issue of Men's Journal magazine, due Tuesday on newsstands.

The Arizona Republican also discusses his battle with melanoma, a potentially fatal form of skin cancer, and describes his health as fine.

"I just came from my dermatologist yesterday with a clean bill of health. I get examined every three months, because once you've had a melanoma, the likelihood of another one is greatly increased," McCain said. "Most normal Americans have to go once a year; I go every three months. And once in awhile, they find something somewhere on my body, and they cut it off."

73. There are lots of repugs who will not vote for McCain...
so he could only get elected by taking a huge number of Democrat voters which is not going to happen either. I don't think McCain can win primaries to get the repug nomination except in states where Democrats can cross over and vote for him to screw up the repugs. I'm not going to lose any sleep worrying about who can beat 72 yr. old totally unpredictable cancer-ridden McCain.

8. McCain is the logical pseudo-moderate candidate that the thugs will
use to counter the RW extremism of Bush and the neocons.

This is part of a long term plan that the RW has to keep the RW in power in order to continue the PNAC agenda for empire.

We need to start a campaign directed toward "middle America" against McCain now; he is not a reasonable alternative Bush, and will continue to destroy our country if Bush has not already killed this planet by 2008.

16. Instead of running his mouth, why doesn't he try running his Senate seat?
Let's see some of that "absolute" leadership, McCain. Stand up to BushCo and their assinine Social Security plan; call for investigations into the "secret memo" and all the other Iraqnam lies BushCo's shoved down a compliant Congress' collective throats; repeal the destructive tax breaks and reinstate the gutted environmental laws; push again, but this time for some "true" campaign reforms. . .

Show us you know how to lead, McCain. And more than that, show us "where" you plan to lead us. You don't have to compromise your "ideals" or strike bargains you don't want . . . just show us the what, when, where, why and how of your self-believed leadership skills and we'll make the choice if you get to be President. "Show us the manner," McCain, else you'll deserve nothing better than the door.

Edited on Sat May-07-05 12:30 PM by loindelrio
He would be 72 by the time he is sworn in.

He has been treated for melanoma, and I am sure a number of years in a NV prison camp did not do much for his life expectancy.

With the problems the next President will face, they are going to need to be in excellent physical shape to take the stress.

On Edit: 2000 was his shot. If he wanted it, he should have fought for the GOP nomination, or run as a 3rd party candidate.

were mentally and physically capable to be President into their 80's. But these were people who lived clean lives with a lot of physical activity.

My experience is that men who have been through the ringer like McCain has generally start to fail in their 70's. They may live into their 80's, but there is no way they would have the stamina to effectively serve as President.

Straight-talking Sen. John McCain wants his friend Sen. John Kerry to ice his "obvious" desire to run for president again and focus on his day job. "It's pretty obvious, the way he's acting, he'd like to try it again," the Arizona Republican said of a 2008 Kerry bid.

58. That's exactly right
The extreme right of the Republican Party would never nominate this guy. He's far too moderate for them on a LOT of positions. The only people he gets any support from for his Presidential bid are people who are still racked with guilt about Vietnam, and see a vote for him as a way of making things right for Vietnam veterans.

I think we saw how well that played out for John Kerry.

66. Way too early
Bill Clinton was not on anybody's radar screen in 1989. (If people knew him at all it was for a dreadful speech at the convention the year before.

Anything can happen in the next two years. Hillary can become even stronger by running a phenomenal 2006 race or the race could diminish her appeal. Circumstances could make an issue that Clark or Edwards is behind more critical and visible - and this may position them well. A governor could deal well with some issue and move up in prominance. Kerry's activism could make him worth a second look.

Also, don't over rate McCain or Guillani
Guiliani - is a slease. He was great on 911, but you wouldn't want him for 4 years. He dropped out of the Senate race against Hillary because he was losing badly (although he said prostrate cancer). He actually told the NYC media he was getting a divorce BEFORE he told his wife he was divorcing her. He crossdressed regularly for a Broadway fundraiser - innnocent, NYC fun for a good cause - this may be a problem elsewhere (was more sure before Laura's comedy, he stayed with a gay couple after his wife threw him out.

McCain handled a smaller amount of slime with less success and far less grace than Kerry did. (Also, Kerry co-ordinated the Senate Vietnam vets to back McCain. They were fantastic. If he's attacked in the primaries this time, a diabolical move on Kerry's part (esp if he's not running) would be to defend McCain with the same passion he did in 2000. Saying that standing by when these things happen and not speaking up, is the mark of a coward. )

Also, even in his own accounts of his Senate work, he's a hot head. (Dean doesn't really have a problem with his temperand look what they did). I only read the chapter dealing with the POW/MIA work, because early last year some recommended reading it - more to understand Kerry. From his own book, the conclusion I reached was that dealing with the Nixon administration, the Vietnamese, ultra conservative Bob Smith, and the difficulty of getting everyone to agree, were no more difficult for Kerry than keeping McCain from exploding publicly!

63. McCain is still viewed
by many people as an independent-minded man of principle (not saying that's what he is, that's what he appears to be.) He is one of the few genuinely popular politicans in the country.

But the right-wing nutjobs view him as a sellout, he has no support among the evangelicals, and therefore they will keep him from getting the nomination. The GOP business class also wants someone who will tow the line, and McCain is a little too independent for their comfort.

So the GOP is more likely to go with Jeb or Frist than McCain (or Giuliani). This is to our advantage.

64. That boat has sailed
He and Powell could have gone down in history as leaders who stood against the fascist power play. They instead sold their souls. I will never support McCain.

65. McCain has absolutely ZERO chance of being selected by Diebold
to assume the throne of Imperial Amerika.

None. Poor guy, if only he would prostrate himself before the Imperial Family, which he has done, but not to nearly the extent they desire loyalty from their Stooges.

McCain, ultimately, is nobody's Stooge (though he has tried lately, to put on a show for the Imperial Family, but I am guessing they aren't buying it) and THAt is what will prevent him from EVER being Emperor of Amerika.

Even IF the Imperial family decides, for fictions sake, to let one of their Lackeys NOT named Bush to keep the throne warm for four or eight years.

Poor McCain, it is his greatest misfortune to be ready to run for pResident just when that office has ceased to exist.

67. We should start now to make
sure that this weakkneed politician will get no support from Democrats. McCain has proved himself to be interested only in McCain's destiny. He is not worthy of the office. Be careful of putting trust in people who use the word "I" so frequently and play both sides of the aisle to no ones advantage except to remain in office for a modicum of power and prestige.
