Georgia Erases 'Jim Crow' Laws
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050428/ap_on_re_us/jim_crow_laws

Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a set of bills Thursday that erased the last vestiges of Georgia's segregation-era "Jim Crow" laws. The move was largely symbolic, since none of the language designed to skirt racial integration has been enforced for decades. But Perdue said it was important to show that the state rejects such notions, calling segregation "a tragic era in our past."

"Anytime there's a stain on the state of Georgia that we can erase or cleanse, we need to take the steps to do that," said Perdue, a Republican.

Most Georgia laws that enforced racial segregation had already been thrown out. The remaining passages allowed the governor to close any school or college if there is a threat of violence — such as the mob scenes that sometimes developed when Southern institutions were integrated.

Other sections allowed the state to funnel money to private schools, which presumably would have allowed funding of whites-only schools after courts ordered integration of public schools.

1. Next, we need to cleanse the state government of Republicans.
Ironic quote from Sonny himself:

"Anytime there's a stain on the state of Georgia that we can erase or cleanse, we need to take the steps to do that," said Perdue, a Republican.

Don't let this fool you. Sony doesn't give a crap about his fellow Georgians unless you are rich, powerful and Republican.

:puke:

3. J.B. Stoner, our resident KKK, church bomber
and white supremacist died yesterday. Doubly ironic that Sonny Boy waited until after Stoner's death to "erase" these laws.

Well, you can't erase the way people feel and there are plenty of racists, bigots and xenophobes around here. I live in a diverse and liberal area but I work in a red, red area. I do have a great boss and work with both black, white, young, older folks, men and women. Most of our employees don't live where we work. Too expensive and racist and exclusive (read very few blacks and hispanics and poor people.)

9. The new Voter ID law is just modern Jim Crow.
Sonny doesn't give a shit. He just wants all the votes to go to Republicans.

I met him and he asked me to vote for him. I told him I would never vote for a Republican. So he said "Well, I'm really a Populist."
Right Sonny, you and Lester Maddox.

Arghhh!
Sonny is so awful it makes me long for the days of Zig Zag Zell.

8. They needed space for the anti-gay laws
Shifting the outward target of your hate does not make you any less of a bigot.

12. This is a good thing...
and I commend Sonny for doing something that should have been taken care of many many many years ago. One thing that strikes me as ironic...Sonny was the one who ran on the 'Flag' issue a couple of years ago. He was all about stoking racial tension when he made the confederate flag a major campaign issue. Then he kinda screwed the bubba's that voted for him by not having the confederate flag on the ballot. I am sure those same bubba's are going to be even more pissed off now. It does strike me as very odd that this hasn't been taken care of before. Probably more sad than odd.

Kevin.
