The types of guns that the average citizen can acquire are pretty vast, and your concept that the entire military will follow orders and attack or even kill civilians, especially when some of those very same civilians could be family members, is painting with a broad brush.
The way that the military has been treated as nothing more then cannon fodder by the power that be doesn't garner a whole lot of loyalty...so who do you think will win a company of M-1 Abrams tanks or the Capitol police guarding the US Congress?
