The median is a distribution of discrete data points. It's not the average.
Half of the households fall above that point and half fall below. How far above or below is unknown.
In the data set {1, 2, 3}, the median is 2
In the data set {1, 2, 3, 8, 1,000,000,000 }, the median is 8.
