(14,640 posts)Honestly, I think you're splitting some hairs here, because what you seem to be saying is that Bernie isn't pure enough on civil rights, therefore I'm going to post a thread that in effect denigrates his platform now by casting aspersion on his legislative record. Also it bothers me that people downplay the courage it took to march with King and the old civil rights movement. Because those arrests could have gone south awful quick, and Bernie could have been like some others and gotten killed. That was some serious shit.
And for you and other Clinton surrogates to say, 'well what's he done lately?' and denigrate those things he did in his youth without ALSO laying out line by line, exhaustively detailed record of everything Clinton has done for civil rights is pretty self-serving to say the least. That Civil Rights march in 1963 served to apply the pressure needed to pass the Civil Rights Act. So Bernie was 22 when he marched and probably didn't get very near King. So what? He and 200,000 other people SHOWED up.
The other self-serving thing about this, George, is this: no one person is gonna be able to move the needle on institutional racism. With Clinton you'll get more of the same, because her actions in the Senate, during the 08 campaign against Obama and now in 2015 have proven, to me at least, that she cares much more about getting elected than actually upholding the interests of the common American man or woman once she is elected. Bernie is TELLING us he can't do it alone and calling for us to become involved at a much greater level - a political revolution he's calling it.
This, George, is a defective meme. It really is. The Sanders platform will benefit minorities to a greater degree than whites, though we'll all benefit. Sanders isn't Superman - we all know that. But he's the ONLY one right now speaking truth to power.
Clinton represents power.
Which do you want?
