the need to reach new demographics and that the "secret formula" needs to change with he times.
The present GOP brand can't cope with either of these things and apparently wants to go back to earlier formulas which even less of the consumers want.
It will also be hard to shift towards the Dems on some ideas since the Dem party has shifted towards the right.
