It is imperative that you get along with your immediate neighbors. You don't have to like or respect him, you don't have to have a beer with him or invite him to your barbecues....but you want to be at least on a "hi, how are ya'?" footing with him. Apologize for calling him a racist and forget about trying to change his mind. He's not voting with his mind, he's voting with his "beliefs" and as beliefs are not based in fact, there is nothing you can say to change his vote.
