New England picks Andrew Farrell (No. 1 overall) [View all]

The New England Revolution selected defender Andrew Farrell as No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday in Indianapolis.

The 5-11 Louisville standout anchored the Cardinals' defense, which allowed just 0.62 goals per game in league play. He finished the year tied for third on the team with four goals and nine points. The 20-year-old was a first-team All-American last season as a junior, when he shifted from midfield to the back line.

Chivas USA selected midfielder Carlos Alvarez as the No. 2 pick overall. The team had previously announced its choice. Alvarez was the second-highest University of Connecticut player drafted by the MLS. Chris Gbandi went No. 1 to FC Dallas in 2002.

From East Los Angeles, Alvarez was with the U.S. Under-20 team in 2008 and Mexico's Under-20 team the following year.
