(17,502 posts)during the 1968 amnesty, you got the forms from the post office the stuff and register what NFA stuff that was supposed to be before (machine guns, silencers, short barreled rifles and shotguns). Each window had chart of what had to be registered. I remember going once as a kid during that time. Some folks apparently thought it was a registration of all guns, because I remember folks bringing their guns to the post office. The guy in front of my mom and I showed up with his hunting guns. The clerk used measured the barrel lengths, and said they didn't need to be registered and showed the guy the chart. The guy, and I, looked up the chart of pictures of mortars, machine guns, grenades, and other military stuff. The guy stuffed his guns back in the cases and remarked "I didn't even know any of that shit was legal."
moral of the story,
no market, no crimes committed with legally purchased ones, never saw one for sale, no problem. Perfect form of control.
