But I can see anti-2A politicians making a move. Obama needs (at a minimum) to stand clear and let the effort be killed.

It's not gun control, but the continuation of a culture war; some will feel emboldened to act out. Obama can't afford to choose sides in a gratuitous and symbolic "statement making" ritual.
