45. Sort of reminds me of that old saw

about there being no atheists in foxholes.

I'm appalled at the number of armchair wannabe 'leaders' declaring their willingness to sacrifice OTHER PEOPLE'S SAFETY to satisfy their own notion of superiority.

Listen, I've even told the local police chief to stay off my property unless his official business requires him to step foot in my yard. (He has to telephone me first, and he hates it - but he won't defy me, either.) But if I saw him in hot pursuit of or in search of a genuine felon, I'd cheer him on and do what I could to help. Just don't come pounding on my door every time his nutjob pal, my southside neighbor I call Old Fart, wants to hassle me about what goes on only in his head. That got old quick. A few firm civil rights lectures and a visit to the town council meeting put the kabosh on the harrassment soon enough, though. I simply took all the fun out of it for them, and now they mind their p's and q's a lot better.

The police chief in office when I first moved here was pretty cool, though. He saw his job as mediation more than anything else, and he didn't throw his weight around like a jackass. So of course the town council eventually got around to running him out of office on obviously trumped up charges. He almost refused to arrest anybody who'd listen to reason, and he hated writing traffic tickets worse than poison.
