(23,156 posts)was honestly unaware that it was Easter weekend.
If NM did caucuses, which we don't (or at least not since I've lived here) and they were held on Easter weekend, perhaps 37 people in the entire state would show up. Here in Northern NM where I live, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to a shrine north of the city. This is a VERY Catholic state, and probably even more devout in this part. Starting on Holy Thursday, peaking on Good Friday, but continuing at least through Saturday, the road from Santa Fe to Chimayo is all but overwhelmed with the walkers. They do stay on the side, but it's a highway that has a 55 mph speed limit most of the way, so drivers understandably slow down with so many people walking on the shoulders. Every so often someone gets hit by a car, and on occasion deaths occur.
Interesting bit of local lore, but the essential point is that in some parts of the country holding the caucuses on Saturday between Good Friday and Easter wouldn't matter very much in terms of the turnout, but here in NM it would be huge. Heck, even to hold a primary that day would probably result in noticeably reduced turnout.
